Afton Lafon Mellor Nielson 1919-2010
FARMINGTON, UTAH – Afton Lafon Mellor Nielson, age 91, beloved wife, mother, grandma, Great-grandma, sister, aunt and friend, died October 14, 2010 from complications from Alzheimers. She was born January 30, 1919, in McCammon, Idaho, to Joseph Francis and Annetta Robinson Mellor. Afton attended grade school in McCammon, Idaho, graduated High School in 1937. During World War II she worked at Douglas Aircraft and American Aircraft in California. After returning to Utah she worked at the State Capital for the Department of Education. She married Earl Wells (Bus) Nielson January 30, 1946. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on April 23, 1976. They spent the first 14 years living in Milford, Utah. In 1959 they moved to Farmington, Utah. In 1963, she and her husband adopted Cheri Lynn, their only child. Afton was active all her married life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as a primary teacher, counselor and president. She also had callings in the MIA, and Relief Society. She and her husband served as name locators in the church offices in Salt Lake City. She loved to work in her home and yard with her husband. They enjoyed traveling although the United States, and Europe. She was a member of the Farmington Literary Guild and Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She loved reading, crocheting, sewing, shopping, bowling, golfing, dancing, and going for rides, camping, family reunions, 4-wheeler rides, and snowmobiling. She loved having the grand-kids and great-grand kids visit and stay the night. She is survived her daughter Cheri (Gordon Claine) Smith, grand-daughters Cherlaine (Larry) Webster, Chenese Smith, grand-son Claine Earl (Angela) Smith, 6 great-grandkids Ashlynn, Bracken, Tylie, Caysen, Tessa & Dylan. Sisters: Alice (Duane) Miller of Idaho Falls and Joyce (Clyde) Parks of Twin Falls and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 12:00 noon at the Steed Creek Stake Center, 347 South 200 West, Farmington Utah. Family and Friend may call Tuesday October 19, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Farmington Mortuary, 1941 North Main Street Farmington, Utah across from Cherry Hill and Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the chapel from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to services.
