Afton (Sherrie) Sorensen Clayville passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at her daughter’s home in Bountiful, Utah on November 09, 2018. She was born July 19, 1925 to Hans Sorensen Jr. and Maggie Elizabeth Taylor in Rexburg, Idaho. She grew up with two brothers, Asael and Howard, and three sisters, Alta, Dona, and Marion.
She married Dale Leslie Clayville at her parents home in Burley, Idaho in 1948. Together they raised four children in Bountiful, Utah – Rodney (Gloria), Talonna (Gregg), Kevin, and Roger. They were blessed with thirteen (13) grandchildren and twenty nine (29) great grandchildren. She is survived by her four children and families.
While she was single she worked at the Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield, Utah and held several supervisory and training positions. Mom has always been very active. Before she married she was an accomplished roller skater and started bowling which she carried in to her married life and won many trophies.
After Mom married she decided she wanted to be a beautician and graduated from a cosmetology school in Bountiful, Utah. After she graduated from the school she opened “Sherries House of Beauty”.
Mom enjoyed music and was an accomplished singer. So while she operated her business at home and took care of us kids, she sang in a Trio where they sang at many gatherings and funerals. She also sang in the Sweet Adelines choir for many years.
Both Mom and Dad enjoyed the outdoors and we all spent time going for pine nuts, we collected the pine cones and Mom and Dad would dry them and then bake them. We went for many years Christmas tree cutting and going after fire wood that we cut and split ourselves. We had a family cabin up Weber Canyon by Kamas where we spent many weekends and weeks enjoying the outdoors, cooking turkeys and chickens in a pit. We also rode horses there and swam in the icy cold Weber River along with a lot of fishing.
Mom was an exceptionally good baker, especially her breads, cookies, cakes and pies. The grandchildren always went straight to the cookie jar for a snack. One time one of her grandsons went for a cookie and they were store bought and he wouldn’t eat them. She enjoyed shopping and just being out with her daughter or daughter in law.
After all of us kids were grown Mom and Dad bought a fifth wheel trailer and new pickup. They joined the Beehive Roamers chapter of the Good Sams and traveled coast to coast and in to Mexico and Canada.
Mom enjoyed sewing and quilting and made sure that every new grand baby had a new quilt and then made more later for us all. She was a member of a quilting club at the church where they made quilts to be donated to those in need.
One of Mom’s passions was golfing. She golfed in the women’s league at Lakeside Golf Course in the West Bountiful for twenty plus years. While golfing, Mom was the club champion for many years and one day got a hole in one on hole number seven, a par three hole. Mom golfed as long a she could, until her balance left her so she couldn’t swing the club without tipping over.
Mom was a great example to us all with her love of visiting teaching, willingness to share whatever going to grandchildren’s recitals, plays, dances, soccer or whatever they were doing and constantly talked about them.
Mom has a very strong testimony of Jesus Christ and we believe that she is one of those special Moms that will be rewarded when she meets the Lord.
We love you Mom and will miss your example and influence in our lives.
The family would like to thank Mom’s primary care doctor, Dr. David E. Anisman, MD from the University of Utah health care in Farmington for his excellent care for our Mother.
We also are grateful and thank those at Hospice who assisted Mom over the last week or so.
We are very grateful for our sister, Talonna Rodeback, for all of her hard work assisting Mom and thank her family and her for opening their home to have Mom stay with them in her last few weeks here.
Friends are invited to greet her family Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
