Alan Hatch Terry, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away in the afternoon of Thursday, September 4th, 2014, capping a life marked by talent, dedication, kindness, and a resilient spirit.
Born January 17th, 1949, to Jess and Edith Terry, Alan was raised in the Val Verda area of Bountiful, Utah, the second of four children. After excelling on Viewmont High School’s wrestling team and with the science department, Alan completed a BS in Microbiology from the University of Utah in 1971, and pursued his graduate studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he met his wife Karen. Alan and Karen were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in November of 1973 and settled in Davis County, where they raised their family and enjoyed over 40 years of marriage.
Alan’s work in the sciences was fueled by his passion for the writings of Isaac Azimov and Ray Bradbury. He also loved photography and the cartoons of Gary Larson. Though he dealt with a variety of health challenges throughout his adult life, he was a cherished influence in his family, and especially enjoyed his opportunity to be a grandfather late in life. The warm depth of his spirit and example moved many and his absence will be felt.
Preceded in death by his parents, Alan is survived by his brothers, Jay (Leslie) and Gordon, his sister Barbara, his wife Karen, their children Joshua and Katie (John), and his granddaughters, Evelyn and Hannah.
