Albert (Ab) William Mayo was born June 26, 1924 in Scofield, Utah to Albert Charles Mayo and Frances Sackman. He died Sunday June 16, 2019 in Layton, Utah of causes incident to age, just 10 days shy of his 95th birthday. He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Janett (Jan) Larsen Mayo, just 5 months earlier. They would have celebrated their 70th anniversary this year. He is survived by his three children, Stephen (Mickee) Mayo, Keith (Shirley) Mayo, and Jan (Rod) Massie; eleven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
He was the youngest of 6 siblings – Fona, Elvira, John, Virginia, Mary and Albert. He grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School. He married his best friend on May 19, 1949 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They enjoyed 69 wonderful years together, raising their family in Farmington, where they lived for 64 years.
He was active in his LDS ward and served in numerous callings. He was very active in the Farmington Lions Club, including serving as club president, and numerous other community service events. In the early years of his marriage he & Jan enjoyed riding their horses with their cowboy buddies. Then motorcycles came along which earned him the nickname of 'Bullet'. He and Jan loved camping and motorcycle riding, and especially spending time at their cabin.
Ab was a skilled mechanic, starting work as an automobile mechanic in his youth, then becoming an aircraft engine mechanic and serving in World War II. Later he worked at Hill Air Force Base for 25 years doing major overhauls on various types of military fighter jets and supervising 10-18 mechanics. He could fix just about anything, and if he didn't have the tool he needed he would often make it. In his off time he was often found working in his barn on someone else’s lawn mower, motorcycle, or repairing their sprinklers.
There will be a viewing Friday, June 21, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Russon Mortuary in Farmington. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 22, at 11:00 am at the mortuary with a viewing before from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.
