Albert Whipple

Albert Jay Whipple passed away the evening of Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at home with his wife and family. He was born on October 20, 1924, in Garfield, Utah, to Dewey Albert Whipple and Jennie Smith Whipple. He joined the US Navy in 1943, participated in WWII as a submariner on the USS Roncador. After the War he got out of the Navy for a brief time but reenlisted taking the reenlistment test in the shortest time with the highest grade ever recorded and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer by the time he got out in 1951. The Navy sent him to Treasure Island near San Francisco, California, where he met his future wife, Alice Estelle Manning. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 1, 1949. After graduating in the top 5% from Stanford in 1956, he moved his family to Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked as an engineer for Convair. After three years, the desire to be near family drew them to Bountiful, Utah where he was employed as a project engineer until he retired in 1988. With the exception of a few years in the early 1970’s which took the family to Sacramento, California, Bountiful, Utah, was the center of his universe. He helped raise a wonderful family while he worked hard to support them and served those in the area. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in Elders Quorum presidencies, as a Bishopric member, on the High Council, as a Sunday School teacher, a Webelos Leader and a Temple worker for many years in both the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples. After 3 years of retirement he went back to work at from Hill Air Force Base from 1981 thru 1989. He worked with his hands making beautiful wood carving, fabric, leather and copper art and mechanical things. His love of music was felt by his family as he supported and encouraged them in their lessons and performances.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, and his six children: Victoria (Gary Morris) North Salt Lake, Albert (Linda) Kaysville, Alan (Pennie) Layton, David, Provo, Jeanette (Kim Eggett) Bountiful, Gordon (Michelle) Houston, Texas. He is also survived by 19 grand- children and 16 great-grandchildren and siblings Dexter Whipple, Illa Harvey, Doris Schooley, Dennis Whipple, Doug Whipple, and Tom Whipple.

Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Sunday, October 13, 2013, between 6 and 8 pm at Russon Brothers Mortuary 295 N. Main Bountiful, UT. A viewing will also be held at the church before the funeral from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 11 am on Monday, October 14, 2013, at the Bountiful 24th Ward 720 E. 550 N.
