Alice Richards Cannon Hicken

Alice Richards Cannon Hicken, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend returned to our Father in Heaven at the age of 94 in Bountiful, Utah on May 15, 2015 after prolonged illness.  Alice was the daughter of Hugh J. Cannon and Sarah Ellen Richards Cannon. Alice was born and raised in Salt Lake City and spent three years in Switzerland when her father was mission president there.  After marriage she spent three years in California as her husband, Dr. Lloyd Hicken, did his residency.  Later, their family enjoyed three years in Brazil where she served as a “mission mother.”  They raised their family together in Bountiful. Lloyd R. Hicken and Alice were married on March 29, 1946 in the Salt Lake City Temple by her grandfather, George F. Richards.  They were blessed with 5 wonderful children, the focus of her time, energy, and love.  She was devoted to her good husband, supporting him in his many church assignments and medical practice. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  Born with a testimony that never wavered, she instilled that testimony in her children and shared it with her grandchildren in word and the way she lived her life.  She served as secretary to the Patriarch of the Church and later to her husband with his call as Stake Patriarch.  She filled many callings in the various organizations of the church, particularly the Relief Society.  Alice also served with her husband over the Brazil Mission and had a special love for each of their missionaries.Although Alice struggled with her health throughout her life, she found great satisfaction in researching and writing extensive life and family histories.  She has left a beautiful collection of stories and photo albums.  She left a legacy of love for her posterity and had a special connection with each of her grandchildren, all of whom adore her.  Her love for nature, particularly the mountains and trees, will not be forgotten.  She enjoyed gardening and had beautiful flower gardens. She was happiest when the family was all together, especially for the holidays. Alice epitomized the regal role of womanhood and was the essence of grace and beauty.  Her greatest desire is an eternal family.No stranger to trials, Alice was preceded in death by three of her children: Kathleen, Stephen and David; as well as her parents; two brothers, Donald and Dean; and grandson, Randall.She will be deeply missed by her husband, Lloyd; son, Robert (Else), and daughter Linda Voorhees (Kim); brothers George Cannon (Mary) and Max Cannon (Elsie), and daughters-in-law Pat (Hicken) Kasper and Jill (Hicken) Downs; 26 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.            Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the Val Verde 1st Ward, 2633 South 50 West, Bountiful. Friends and family may call Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, and again Wednesday morning 10:00-11:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionary fund.
