1953 Lynn 2023

Alvin Lynn Smith

December 29, 1953 — December 21, 2023

Centerville, UT

Heaven got a little less reverent on December 21, 2023, with the passing of Alvin Lynn Smith. Heart attacks aren’t for wimps, and though he was as tough as nails, Lynn passed away from one at his Centerville home, where he and his wife, Gaylene, have lived for 30 years. He died a week short of his 70th birthday.

Lynn was born December 29, 1953, to Lowell Jay and Leah Fitzgerald Smith in Logan, Utah. He was the third of six children who were closely knit and diverse in personality. He grew up in Logan, where he met many lifelong friends who became bonded by the endless antics of their youth. He graduated from Logan High School in 1972 and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Northern California and Nevada from 1973-1975. He met Gaylene Eppich, the best thing that ever happened to him, in April 1975. They married on August 27, 1976, in the Logan, Utah, Temple. He was told often that he married far, far above himself, and he was always quick to agree. They were blessed with five children.

Lynn worked for Chevron for nearly 30 years as a Field Operator, Console Operator, and Firefighter. He was also an EMT. He retired from his profession in 2014, then became a full-time nuisance to society as he pursued his many hobbies.

Lynn loved:

* Gaylene

* His grandchildren

* His children

* Tools

* Camping

* Shooting Sports

* Classic car shows with friends and family

* The Three Stooges

* Family

* Christmas

* Halloween

* Writing silly poems

* Driving and enjoying the journey

* Weird food challenges

* Auto mechanics

* Motorcycles

* Telling animated stories

* Pranks

* Coining silly phrases

* Spending time in the great outdoors

* Gatherings – anyone and everyone were welcome at his table

* Collecting things – some of value, some not so much!

Lynn is survived by his wife Gaylene; children Hollie Shelton (Shane), Salt Lake City; Jacob (Lauren), Fort Drum, New York; Amber Chidester (John), Syracuse, Utah; Jared (Samantha), Lehi, Utah; and Amanda Cannon (Kyle), South Weber, Utah. He is also survived by siblings Leah Jane Brower, Dennis Smith, Laura Lee Mistycah, Darrin Smith, and Julene Reese. He has nine wonderful grandchildren who brought him such great joy: Cole, Bianca, Luke, Lizzy, Leah, Kennedy, Olivia, and Danny, as well as a multitude of in-laws and nieces and nephews who will greatly miss his teasing and silly antics.

He was preceded in death by his precious grandson, William Chidester; his nephew, Jade Brower; his parents-in-law, Evelyn and Irel Eppich, and his parents, Leah and Jay Smith. Though we are grief stricken by his passing, it brings us great joy knowing he was reunited with his mother after 30 years and his father after eight years.
