Andrew Ball passed away peacefully on August 9, 2017 at the age of 85. Although he left us physically on this date, dementia took him from us several years ago.
Dad was born in Brushy Mountains, Wilkes County, North Carolina on December 4, 1931 to James Arthur and Gladys Marlow Ball. He grew up in the mill town of Kannapolis, North Carolina and spent summers working on his grandfather's farm in Brushy Mountains. He attended J.W. Cannon High School, but joined the United States Navy after his junior year. He was proud of the fact that after four years in the Navy ,and even after receiving his GED, he returned to high school and graduated from A.L. Brown High School. As a teenager and young man, Dad worked at many jobs including for Cannon Mills and JCPenny.
Dad served in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Helena. He made many good friends while serving, one of whom introduced him to Jo Ann Isaac while he was visiting Utah after leaving the Navy. Dad and Mom were married on December 1, 1961 by Spencer W. Kimball and settled in Concord, North Carolina where their first two children were born. In 1964 they returned to Utah and settled in Bountiful where they remained.
Dad graduated from barber school and spent many years as a barber in North Carolina and Utah. He enjoyed cutting people's hair and sharing stories with them. After getting a job at Hill Air Force Base he continued to cut hair on the side in the basement of his house, during his lunch breaks at work and for people in the hospital and for deceased people at the funeral home.
Dad worked at Hill Air Force Base as a mechanic on the F-4 Phantom jet and supporting the air force missile program from 1966 until he retired in 1997. He had many friends at the base and spent time outside work camping and fishing with them. He enjoyed taking his family to air shows at the base and showing them what he did.
Dad enjoyed rodeos and demolition derbies and the family spent many evenings at Lagoon watching these types of events.
Dad was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings and positions, including as an usher at Temple Square and the Conference Center for 40 years. He was always willing to serve others and after retiring from Hill Air Force Base Dad was constantly serving those around him, mowing lawns, pulling weeds, shoveling snow and just helping out where ever he could.
Dad is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jo Ann, his four children; Maureen Hatch (Royce), Tom (Kim), Kimball (Teri), Cheryl Tucker (Dean), thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, his siblings; Lorene, Willis, Linda, Sam, Dorothy and Marvin. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Gladys Ball, one brother, one sister, Evelene, and one grandchild, Atticus.
Dad's funeral will take place on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 11 am at the Bountiful Tabernacle, 55 South Main Street, Bountiful. Friends can greet the family at the church prior to the funeral beginning at 9:30 am.
