Ann Allan

June 4, 1939 — May 21, 2022

Agnes Ann Stewart McDonald Allan joined the alto section of Heaven’s angelic choir on May 21, 2022. Ann was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 4, 1939, and was adopted by loving parents, Mary and James Smith. She grew up in the Salvation Army faith where she learned to play the coronet. She also played the accordion, and later taught herself to play the piano and organ. Ann was a talented seamstress having served an apprenticeship as a tailor’s assistant specializing in men’s custom suits.
At age 16, she immigrated to Canada to live with her brother, Jim, where he introduced her to the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. At 18, she was baptized and shortly after returned to Scotland where she met “Gorgeous George” Allan at a church activity. They married in Glasgow and were later sealed together with their oldest daughter in the London Temple. At age 26, she and her young family immigrated to the United States for George’s employment.
Ann always loved music and singing. Throughout her life she participated in many choirs in her school, church, and communities. In 1986, she joined the Utah Opera Chorus where she performed in over 60 productions as well as many other concerts and musical events sponsored by UOC. Following her retirement from UOC, she began singing with Utah Voices until 2020.
For 26 years, she served as the choir director in the Bountiful 14th Ward, a calling she adored. She loved and cared about each member of her choir and her ward family. She generously shared her talents with her family, friends, and neighbors. She loved sewing, knitting, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.
Ann was infinitely supportive of her grandchildren and invested in their talents. She taught them to sing, inspired them to play instruments, taught them to sew, knit, take care of others, and so much more. She always provided an endless supply of love, hugs, delicious “go home treats,” and grilled cheese sandwiches. She is dearly missed by them all.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband, George, daughter Gael Pyper, and granddaughter, Heather (Roxy) Wichman. She is survived by two sons, Neivell and Kingsley Allan and youngest daughter, Beth Oliphant, along with 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
