Ann Janette Lalli

Upon the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Ann J. Hepworth Lalli, we pause to reflect upon a simple life exceptionally well-lived.

Ann was born on October 8, 1930 to Joseph G. Hepworth and Alice Johnson Hepworth in Bountiful, Utah, where she lived her entire life. She was the eldest of four children including Marian Thompson who preceded Ann in death, Joan Hepworth Roybal, and Michael Hepworth. She attended Weber College where she met and married Lee J. Lalli in 1950. Ann and Lee had five children, John (Valerie), Jan (Bill Heriford), Lisa (Gary Flinders), Mark (Michelle), and Matthew (Andra). They also raised their oldest grandchild, Scott (Jenny), whom they always treated as a sixth child. Ann is survived by her brother and sister, sister-in-law Carolyn Lane (Ken), her children and their spouses, 19 grandchildren, and an ever-changing number of great-grandchildren.

Ann was sickly as a child but grew into a beautiful woman of vigor and passion. She flourished in motherhood and found uncommon energy to act on behalf of her family and community. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which she had many callings. She served two missions for the Church, one in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the other in Manchester, England. She was omnipresent in her children’s schools and supported them in their numerous activities. She never missed a ballgame. You could find her sitting behind home plate, keeping score, and cheering loudly (sometimes too loudly). She loved the theatre, mostly as a writer and director but sometimes as an actress too. Even standing at the entrance handing out playbills was fun for her.

She had a good sense of humor and found the ability to laugh at herself as she embraced her imperfections, which were few and far between and usually involved nothing more serious than tripping over minor obstacles on the ground or traffic infractions (though there were quite a few of those). At times in her life she had more material possessions than at others, but it never seemed to matter to her. She was grateful for what she had and was willing to give it away to anyone she thought might need or like it.

Though she experienced more than her fair share of adversity, mostly at the bookends of her life, she never let herself be cankered by it. Rather, she rallied and kept moving forward with courage, stamina, and a hope for good things to come. She was an energizing yet stable force in all our lives, and we will miss that most of all.

Ann believed in four great truths: (1) her church; (2) her family, over whom she often fretted but thoroughly loved and continually supported; (3) her country (which she characteristically viewed only within the confines of the Republican party); and (4) a good game of bridge. It was through the latter that she became involved with a group of players at the Barton Creek Retirement Center where she met a beloved companion, Ken Drost, and lived out the final years of her 91-year life in the same way she lived the rest of it – looking after others, giving of herself, saying kind things, and keeping herself busy. She died of natural causes on October 24, 2021.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2021 at the Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, where a viewing will be held from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. prior to services.
