Annette Swaner Manning

March 10, 1934 — April 12, 2023

Bountiful, UT

Annette Swaner Manning passed away peacefully on April 12, 2023, in the presence of her loving husband of almost 71 years, Dave Manning. April 12th had a very special meaning to Annette because it was the day Kristie, her first child, was born.

Annette was born March 10, 1934, in Ogden, Utah, to Herbert A. Swaner and Annie F. Salt Swaner. She was born into a very special family, with cousins and relatives living close by on Darling Street in Ogden. Annette often talked about happy memories growing up with the Darling Street “Gang” that was comprised of her Hurst cousins.

The story of Annette meeting Dave is the beginning of one of the greatest love stories ever told. One day, Annette and a friend were playing tennis at Monroe Park in Ogden, when a handsome young man “accidentally” hit his golf ball into the tennis court. Of course, Dave being the perfect gentleman apologized and asked if he could buy her an Orange NEHI soda at a service station nearby. Annette accepted and the rest, as they say, is history.

Annette and Dave were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 6, 1952, for time and eternity. They eventually made their home in Bountiful, Utah, where they have lived for 56 years. During this time in Bountiful, Annette began working at the KFC store on the corner of 5th South and Main Street. This part-time job would eventually lead to she and Dave becoming managers of their own store. First, in North Salt Lake, then back to the store on Main Street, and finally the newly built store on 5th South and 5th West in Bountiful. After years of hard work, and trying to teach teenagers a strong work ethic, their last store was eventually named Harman-Manning in their honor.

Annette was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had  unshakable faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ, the prophet Joseph Smith, and the Book of Mormon. As a member of the Church, Annette had many important callings from being a counselor in the Young Women’s program, to secretary in the primary and as a “Cookie Grandma” for the children in the Barton Creek Ward nursery.

Perhaps the calling she loved most was serving in the temple with her eternal companion. They served an 18-month calling in the Salt Lake Temple, a six-month mission during the open house and dedication of the Nauvoo Illinois Temple and served for 22 years in “her” temple, the Bountiful Utah Temple. Her love of the temple has been a great example and blessing to her family.

Besides her membership in the Church and her family, the thing Annette loved most was opening her home to friends, family and even teenagers “fresh” from a night’s work at KFC. When you walked into Annette’s home you instantly felt welcomed and loved. This was especially true for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandma ‘Net could make a game out of anything, and her family loved these impromptu games!

Annette is survived by her husband David Gale Manning, daughters Kristie (Kim) Goddard, Kathleen Manning, Julie (Ross) Barker, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and Millie the Cat.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a sister, a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
