Anthony Lee Bernard

Born in Norfolk, Virginia.  The eldest son of Rocco Bernard and Eva Mae Bowen.  He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Shirley (Robinson) was born two years later on his birthday, then another son, Terry, and a daughter, Reva (Dailey).

Tony had a deep love for music and took to the violin at age 8, studying at Peabody Conservatory. In his later years he had vocal training and joined the Utah Opera Chorus singing 1st tenor in 16 operas.  He returned to the violin in his later years.

Dad served in the US Army where he was stationed in Gosen, Japan following WWII from early 1946 until late August of 1947.  Upon his return, he married his teenage sweetheart Lois Gene Mangum in the Salt Lake Temple on September 3, 1947.  This union resulted in 5 children, Edith Stephenson (Jon), Milton (deceased, survived by Annette), Paul (Irene Ota), Nannette, and Russell (Julie).  21 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren.

Dad graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational High School in Baltimore, Maryland as a journeyman linotype operator and printer.  He worked for his Dad’s print shop for a short while. Upon moving to Salt Lake City in 1948 he worked for the Deseret News as a linotype operator until 1963 when he joined in partnership as Lyman-Bernard Typesetting.  In 1984 he began Bernard Typesetting retaining rights to the Quality Stamp and Sign brand.  All of the children worked there in their early years.  Today, Russell owns the company, Nannette and Paul remain with the family business.

Dad was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived for his faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ and loved the Lord.  He was Executive Secretary to six bishops, High Counselor, and Family History Director. One of his favorite callings was Choir Director. Even in his final days at St. Joseph’s Villa, he was always dressed for services held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dad’s loving spirit was felt by many at St. Joseph Villa as he shared his life experiences and played the violin to those around him. His influence will be missed. We as a family are grateful for the care Dad received at St. Joseph.

Preceded in death by his sweetheart Lois, son Milton, his parents, brother Terry, and one great-grand son.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Bountiful 45th Ward located at 115 East Wicker Lane ((2000) South), Bountiful, Utah.  Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Wednesday evening July 11, from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary 295 N Main Street, Bountiful, UT 84010. Interment, Bountiful City Cemetery.
