Our sweet and cheerful mother, Arva Lou Young Haslam, passed away on July 6, 2013 of causes incident to age. She was 88 years old. Arva was born to Alfred Philip Young and Jeanet Millward Young on December 21, 1924. She was the youngest of three daughters and three sons all of whom predeceased her. She had a slew of nieces and nephews in Idaho, Utah, California and Colorado.
Arva graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City. She met Dale Breeze Haslam while she worked at Hammond’s Store on State Street and Second South. Dale worked next door at the Empire Theatre as an usher. They fell in love and Dale entered the Army. They were married while Dale was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He then went off to serve in Italy with the 10th Mountain Division and returned home to join Arva in Salt Lake City and they started what was to become a pretty big family.
Arva was first and foremost a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had six boys: Stephen Dale was no. 1, Dennis Vaughn (Deborah) was no. 2, J. Randall no. 3, Robbie Layne (Diane) no. 4 passed away last year, Kevan Kirk (Michelle) passed away in 2001, and no. 6, David Philip (Diana) came last. All told, six sons, 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Dale passed away in 1981.
In her more active years, Arva spent her free time with arts and crafts, regular card games with her girlfriends, the Sweet Adelines, the Red Hat Society and keeping her house decorated for all holidays and seasons. Arva had a great sense of humor and loved to have a laugh. She was always there for her (family) kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren to help out, nurture and lend a listening ear. “It’ll work out, don’t worry too much.” Later she loved to watch John Wayne, Rock Hudson and the stars of the 40s, 50s and 60s on TV. She had impressive collections of knick knacks. Her last days were difficult and confusing for her and she wanted her boys nearby.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013 at the LDS Chapel, 102 East 1400 South, Bountiful, Utah, where a visitation will be held 10:45 – 11:45 am prior to services. Interment- Salt Lake City Cemetery.
