Barbara Jean Roy-Winegar

Barbara Jean Freestone Roy-Winegar passed away peacefully on August 6, 2018 surrounded by family and loved ones, due to complications following recent surgery.  Barbara was born May 28, 1951 to Robert Eugene and Ellen McKean Argyle Freestone in Salt Lake City, Utah.  With the exception of a few years, Barbara resided in West Bountiful, Utah her entire life.  She treasured the community and friendly neighbors she had there. 

On December 30, 1980 Barbara married Dennis Roy.  They were blessed with a sweet daughter, Heather, whom Barbara was always so proud of! Barbara married Lee Richard Winegar on August 17, 2012.  Lee and Barbara brought a lot of joy into each other’s lives during their years together. 

A brilliant student and hard worker, Barbara graduated from Viewmont High at an early age.  She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Weber State College and a Master’s Degree from Lesley University. Barbara began her elementary school teaching career at the age of 18 and continued to teach for 46 years.  The majority of her career was spent teaching in the Davis School District, with the exception of a few years in Montana and Richfield, Utah.  Barbara was an excellent teacher who found unique ways to engage and challenge her students. 

Barbara loved music, played the organ, violin and piano beautifully, and taught piano lessons for many years. A strong advocate of the arts, she frequently attended musical theater presentations, inviting loved ones to accompany her.  Barbara loved to travel and had recently returned from a Disney World adventure with her daughter and grandson.  Friends, family, and neighbors were frequently beneficiaries of her selfless service and thoughtfulness.  Barbara loved to surprise others with special events and celebrations.  Her handwriting was neat, beautiful, and full of fancy flourishes, making the recipient of a card or letter feel very special!  Barbara was a life-long member of the LDS church and recently enjoyed serving as a worker at the Bountiful Temple.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Lee Winegar, daughter, Heather, and her only grandchild, Blaine Matthew.  She adored Blaine and loved helping with his care.  Barbara is also survived by her mother, Ellen Freestone, and siblings, Ronald LaVar (Peggie), Tammie Lee (Bruce) Bratsch, Kevin Argyle (Diane), Kristine (Guy) Koelling, and sisters-in-law Myra (Robert) and Sherri (Lynn).  Barbara will also be missed by a large multitude of nieces and nephews.   

She is preceded in death by her former husband, Dennis Roy, her father, Robert Eugene Freestone, and two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Eugene and Lynn Argyle. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the West Bountiful 2nd Ward, 840 N. 800 W., West Bountiful, UT.  A viewing will be held on Friday, August 10, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, UT from 6:00-8:00 pm and from 9:30-10:30 am previous to the services.  Interment will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery.
