Bertie passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 21, 2018. She was born to loving parents, Lorenzo Broderick and Thenelda Jensen on Aug. 17, 1927 in San Francisco, CA as the second of eight children. Although she grew up during the depression, her parents worked to make life seem abundant and joyful in difficult times. She married Conrad (Connie) Scheidell on Sept.19, 1952 and began her life as a USAF pilot’s wife. She traveled with him to his assignments throughout the world, fostering many friendships along the way. They planted roots in Bountiful, UT upon his retirement in 1970. She found great joy as she served friends, strangers, ward members and family throughout her life. Bertie loved being with her family and attending her grandchildren’s performances and sports meets. She especially loved cooking for her family and turned Sunday dinners along with holidays into events featuring extraordinary food. Bertie loved her life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed sharing fun activities with family and friends including; playing cards, playing dice, going out to dinner with “The Ladies of the Club” and watching movies during sleepovers with her grandchildren. She was always on the move and ready to do something fun. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of callings throughout her life. Bertie treasured friendships with people of all ages. She was loved by many and served wherever she went. Being the youngest to lose a husband in her circle of friends, she reached out to new widows and included them in many fun activities. Bertie began a life of ministering to the sick and elderly at the age of 16 in a nursing home. She went on to volunteer for the Red Cross in hospitals, to care for newborns waiting for adoption and then when Connie passed away, she began her life as an LDS Hospital Volunteer. There she served in the emergency room and ICU waiting room where she delivered warm blankets along with empathy, comfort and support in times of loneliness, illness and loss. She also delivered her homemade salsa each Wednesday morning to the ER staff. At LDS Hospital she gave 15,000 hours of service over 30 years. She served as the President of LDS Hospital Volunteers 1990-1991, as a board member, and as President of the State of Utah Hospital Volunteer Association 1994-1996. Bertie helped plan and implement the ongoing Lights for Learning program at LDS Hospital which raises scholarships for nurses and worked to promote organ donation in the state of Utah. Hers was a life of ministering and service and she will be missed.
