She was raised in Eureka, Utah, where she attended Tintic High School and made life-long friendships that continued with yearly reunions that she was instrumental in putting together. Bethine attended and graduated from LDS School of Nursing in 1948. During her senior year, she met and married Harris G. Bernhisel, in Elko, Nevada. They eloped on a bus and shared a banana split. (Marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.) She later attended the University of Utah and received her Bachelors of Nursing and attended the University of Minnesota. The Bernhisel family spent many years in Minnesota, where Bethine made wonderful friends and had their oldest four children.
Bethine's family came back and settled in Bountiful, Utah. She was continually involved in community and church service. There was not anything she couldn't or learn to do. She was an amazing seamstress, cook, baker, entertainer and also a master tile setter, a perfectionist from start to finish. She enjoyed the music and the arts, from learning to oil paint to attending the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City annually for many decades with friends. She was a great believer in education and was always helping her children and grand children continue to learn. She also enjoyed playing golf, tennis and going skiing, even though she was never able to achieve perfection in these activities.
