On Saturday May 1, 2021 Betty Jane Helland graduated from Country Care Assisted Living Center at the age of 96. Betty was born March 1, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the first of two children born to Mary Jane Albiston and Lorenzo Lawrence Bate.
She joined the Marines where she did key punch for the final pay checks in Washington DC during World War II. Betty met her husband, Eugene Alfred Helland while serving in Washington DC. They were married June 28, 1948. They were married for 65 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Gene and her brother Dick.
Betty is survived by her four children, Leslie Jane (Richard) Bousfield, Eric Conrad (Wilma Ann) Helland, Patricia Lynn (Bruce) Brown and Debra Lee (Randy) Johnson. She has 21 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren, all of whom she bragged about to anyone that would listen.
Betty loved watching and participating in sports. She held track records and was the state table tennis champion while in the Marine Corps. Betty was a member of a semi-professional women’s softball team, and at the age of 55 she took up tennis. At age 62, Betty started competing in tennis at the World Senior Huntsman games at its inception in 1987. She competed for 30 consecutive years ending her streak at the age of 92, winning 73 medals during her tenure. She was inducted into the Huntsman World Senior Games Hall of Fame in 2009.
Betty was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a member of the Bountiful 10th ward for over 50 years. She enjoyed serving as an ordinance worker at the Bountiful Temple.
Betty will be buried alongside her husband at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Camp Williams Veterans Cemetery.
