Betty Jean Sim

September 10, 1927 — December 30, 2016

Our sweet wife and mother, Betty Jean Houston Sim, was called home to be reunited with loved ones on December 30, 2016.

Betty was born September 10, 1927 to Julia Ellen Loveless and David Crawford Houston Sr. in Los Angeles, California.  She enjoyed being a big sister to Karma Edna Houston and David Crawford Houston Jr.  She loved spending time with her family and spent many summers as she grew up on her grandfather’s farm in Provo.  She attended East High School and received her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Brigham Young University.

While at the Y she met the love of her life, Fred Alexander Sim. They were married in the LDS Salt Lake Temple August 18, 1949.  They moved to Bountiful, Utah and raised 5 children: Lee Houston (Susan Cutler), Kaysville, Utah; Terrie Ann (Les) Johnson, Moreno Valley, California; Lynn Crawford (Terry Pollard), Colorado Springs, Colorado; Edward James (Lisa Mauerman), South Jordan, Utah; and Julia Jeannette, Bountiful, Utah.  In addition to her children, she is survived by 16 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren.

She spent 21 years teaching junior high school students how to cook and sew. Most of those years were spent at Bountiful Jr High. She loved being a “domestic engineer” and was superb at anything in the kitchen and sewing rooms.  She enjoyed gardening, camping, and traveling.  She was renowned for her gift of candy making, which she gladly shared with her daughters, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.  Many family members, neighbors and friends were recipients of these fabulous treats.

She was a devoted member of the LDS church and served diligently in many callings. With her husband, she spent 18 months as a missionary in Paris, France.

She is preceded in death by her father, mother, sister, brother, and one granddaughter.

A viewing will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017, 6-8 pm at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main Street, Bountiful, Utah.   Saturday there will be a viewing from 9:45-10:45 am at the LDS church, 2651 S. 500 W., Bountiful, Utah.  The funeral will be held at 11:00am following the viewing.  Interment will be at the Memorial Lakeview Cemetery in Bountiful.

In lieu of flowers, Betty’s wish was that donations be made to the LDS Missionary Fund.
