Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, the love of my life left this earth and went to heaven to prepare us a better place.
Bevin Ernest Turner, age 69, was the fifth child of Guy and Rose Ann Turner, born on July 30th, 1954, in Vallejo, California. He went to school in Vallejo and loved sports, playing basketball, baseball and football. He learned scorekeeping at the age of 8 and also mowed his 1st lawn at 8. 60 years later he mowed his last lawn at 68. He wanted to share his love of landscaping and employed many nephews, nieces, some of their friends and some of the youth in our neighborhood.
He broke his leg his senior year and spent 6 months in a full leg cast which he had removed before graduation.
After high school he worked at Hogan Sports & ran a Bait and Tackle shop. He knew a lot about fishing, guns, and sports. He was a great handyman and worked as an apartment complex manager where he handled most of the repairs and upgrades himself. He got his captain’s license and ran a shrimp (bait) boat to provide for the shop. He also learned how to make fly fishing rods and made some for well-known people in the Bay Area, Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders owner being one.
As a youth he was part of the Young Men’s Basketball Team that came to Salt Lake City to participate in the last All-Church Tournament. He enjoyed that time immensely. As a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he knew the gospel was true. For many years he was not an active participant, but when he returned to activity, he never quit again. He always wanted others to feel accepted because on his first day back to church he was greeted as if he had never been gone. He strove to make others feel that way and comfortable by being friendly to all. He fulfilled callings as a Stake Missionary, a Sunday School Teacher, a Nursery Leader, and a Primary Teacher.
He loved his family, my family, the gospel, his dogs- Popples and Bear, his San Francisco Giants, and the Savior.
He married his eternal mate, Valerie, on May 12th, 2001, in the Jordan River Temple. We were blessed to spend 23 years together.
He missed his two brothers, Bruce and Cary, who both passed in 2023. He struggled over the past six months with bouts of pneumonia and infections which wore him out until he was too exhausted to fight anymore.
As an organ donor he knew the value of this process as his sister, Beverly, has received two kidneys and my brother, Matt, has received two corneas. The Utah Eye Bank has his eyes to help someone else.
I will never know the full and far-reaching impact of Bevin’s positive attitude on others.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Guy Allen Turner and Rose Ann Sampson, his brothers: Bruce Allen Turner and Cary Wayne Turner, and his nephew Scott Guy Turner. He is survived by his wife, Valerie Page Turner, his dog Bear, his siblings: Beverly Ann (Craig) Jackson, Stanley Guy Turner, Nancy Alice Turner, and Richard Alonzo (Laura) Turner and also many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to ReNew Home Health, Lakeview Hospital Wound Clinic, The University of Utah Hospital & the Craig H. Nielsen Rehabilitation Hospital for their tireless and dedicated efforts to increase his health and well-being.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. He was a great supporter of those in need and the missionary programs.
