Our loving father was called home December 20, 2019. He fought with all his strength to the very end, enduring much. He is free from the physical restraints on his body that had kept him from enjoying some of the activities he had always loved, and is now with Mom.
Born to Jessie and Sara Porter on March 8, 1925, and raised in Lewiston, Utah. He learned the value of hard work from his father and had to assume a lot of responsibilities on the farm as his father suffered from a long illness. He had such a reputation of good hard work that he made extra money working for the surrounding neighbors.
He graduated from North Cache High School in 1943 and was promptly drafted into the Marines. He never knew why, but he was chosen to be trained as a frog man/underwater demolition. While in boot camp at the age of 18, he lost his father to cancer. He served four long years in the Pacifica surviving some of the hardest and most horrific campaigns of the war. Upon returning from WWII, he returned to Cache Valley where he married Carma Whitney in the Logan Temple on December 5, 1947.
He left the farm and chose the trade of a sheet metal worker. He worked for many years as a shop foreman at Schoppe Sheet Metal, then built his own shop, Porter’s Sheet Metal with his son, which finally took him to his retirement. He had a great talent for creating and building with his hands. He used his talents well and built his own home in Bountiful as well as the family cabin up at Guardsman Pass. He spent many hours in his work room under the garage. Creating wooden turtles, chairs, church steeples, wooden baskets and many other items. He loved landscaping and landscaping projects. One look at his home and yard and you could see the incredible talent he had. He didn’t make much time for TV but did love to watch his beloved Utah Jazz.
He leaves a treasured posterity of three children, Christine (Bob) Long, Blaine (Linda) Porter, Gaylene (Dennis) Jacobson, 11 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He taught us all how to work, how to keep our word and be kind. One of the greatest legacies he left us was the way he treated mom especially when she became ill. His love, devotion and service to her was so inspiring and raised the bar on how you should care for loved ones.
Boyd was preceded in death by his bride, Carma in 2011, his parents, Jessie and Sarah, and his only sibling Bud Porter and numerous aunts and uncles.
Our special thanks to several people, Carma Simmons who was the first to come in twice a week to help dad with the upkeep of the house, and the entire staff at Creekside Senior Living where he spent the last 9 months. Thanks to Renew Hospice Care, and especially to his gal Marina, the hospice nurse who tenderly cared for dad almost daily these last few months.
