Brian C. Spencer passed away unexpectedly on October 20, 2014. Brian was born on December 3, 1962 in Ogden, Utah to Wesley and Jean Spencer. Brian was the youngest of three boys, being raised on his family’s farm in Slaterville, Utah with his brothers Bart Spencer and Darrell Spencer. Brian learned the value of hard work at a young age as he milked cows in the morning, and worked in the hay fields during the day. Brian was a descendent of Mormon Pioneers, of which he was very proud. Their faith, determination and steadfastness in righteousness were all traits that Brian exhibited throughout his life.
Brian graduated from Weber High School in 1981 having participated on the school wrestling and football teams, and performing in many musicals. Brian served faithfully as a fulltime missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Cleveland, Ohio mission. After having attended high school and seminary together, and completing his mission, Brian Spencer married Janel Lynn Peterson on August 31, 1985 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Brian graduated from Weber State University in 1987 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting. He continued his education at Brigham Young University achieving a Master’s of Science in Accounting in 1989, followed by earning his CPA a few years later.
After graduation Brian and Janel moved to Gardnerville, NV where Brian worked for the State of Nevada, and Janel worked as a Kindergarten teacher. While in Nevada they purchased their first home, and grew their family with 5 children, Melissa, Bryce, Steven, Stephanie, and Jacob. During this time they also adopted a family member, their dog Coco, who never left Brian’s side.
In 2004 the family moved to Farmington, Utah where Brian took a job working for the State of Utah in Salt Lake City. Brian was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints throughout his life and twice served as a Counselor in the Bishopric. He was very active in the scouting program, and enjoyed working with many young men helping them achieve their Eagle Scout award. He looked for opportunities to provide service and recently was the head chef for the Farmington West Youth Conference Trek. If there were an award given for setting up and taking down the most folding chairs at church activities, Brian surely would have won it. His generosity and service included opening his home for many years to care for his aging, widowed mother-in-law. Brian quietly gave service without any desire for recognition.
Brian had many interests and hobbies, including dutch-oven cooking, Boy Scouts, and watching sports, (especially his alma-mater BYU), but none of them took precedence over tending to his family. He was an active loving father and husband who put the needs of his family above his own.
Brian leaves behind a legacy of love and Christ-like service for his wife Janel Spencer, and children Melissa Anne Spencer, Bryce Brian Spencer (Melissa), Steven Brian Spencer, Stephanie Lynn Spencer, and Jacob Brian Spencer. He will be dearly missed.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a Viewing which will be held at the Farmington West Stake Center, 549 South 1525 West, Farmington, UT on Saturday, October 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
