Brookie Mae Cardon Peterson, 86, of Bountiful, UT, peacefully passed away at home on December 14, 2012, with her family and sweetheart of 65 years by her side. She was born in Tucson, AZ on May 14, 1926 as the first child of Louis S. and Winnafred Bellamy Cardon. She was later joined by four brothers and soon showed herself to be a natural leader, nurturer and extremely bright.
She first met her life’s companion, Burke Peterson, in college when she asked him to the girls’ Halloween dance. They were married in 1947 and continued their courtship every day of their lives together. Their home was blessed with five daughters who in turn filled it up with laughter, singing and “a lot of fun.” The “Five Lovelies” were each given love, security and meaningful attention that was later extended to grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Outside of the home, Brookie faithfully served in multiple facets of the LDS Church, including matron of the Jordan River Temple, became a twice-published author, and accompanied her husband to over 50 countries in his capacity as a General Authority of the church. She highly valued education and was looked upon as a teacher and a giver to those who stood in need. She gave loving compassion and endless charity to family, friends, and neighbors.
She is preceded in death by her parents and two daughters: Sherrie (Roger) Decker and Robin (James) Pedersen. She is survived by her beloved husband, H. Burke Peterson; three daughters: Gayle (William) Steele, Jana (Mark) Staples, and Keri (Bruce) Nielsen; her four brothers: Louis, Marriner, Phillip and Grover; 24 grandchildren; and 58 great-grandchildren. In total, Brookie and Burke’s progeny total 111 very blessed souls.
