Calvin Lester Dahlquist, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at his home in West Valley City, Utah surrounded by his wife of sixty-four years and many loving family members. He was born October 20, 1928, the only child of Charles A. Dahlquist and Hattie Mae King. As his father died when he was only three months old, he was raised by his mother and grandmother, growing up within the boundaries of the old Salt Lake 24th Ward. From his earliest years, he secured jobs beginning with the shoemaker Gus Hylene around the corner, and ultimately saved enough money to eventually buy a car even before he was legal to drive! One of his favorite past-times was to drive around admiring the cars in myriad car lots around Salt Lake.
He married Joycelyn Pedersen on October 23, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and they are the parents of five children: David (Maria Elena) of Payson, Utah; Kent (Ginger) of Bountiful; Robert (Kari) of Poway, California; Shauna (Allen) Jorgensen of West Valley City; and Gary (Stacey) of Farmington.
He was a salesman by trade calling on grocery stores around the intermountain area for almost thirty years and was a former president of the Salt Lake Jaycees. Longtime residents of Bountiful, Cal and Joyce served in the Bountiful LDS Temple before they moved to West Valley City in 2004 to a home without stairs which provided less obstacles for aging bodies. At the time of his death, Cal was a high priest in the Hunter Village Ward. His family shall ever be grateful for the many friends and neighbors they have come to love in the Hunter Villas whose acts for friendship and service have made the last few years a tender delight. A special loving place in his family’s collective heart has been created for those of Symbii Hospice and in particular Elisa and Susely who made his last weeks so comfortable
He is survived by his wife, Joycelyn; his five children and their spouses; sixteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law Clare Higgins Dahlquist; and four grandchildren, Rebekah, Jenny, Ryan, and Sean Dahlquist.
