Carl Henry Turnblom was born on May 11, 1928, at his grandfather Henry Talbot's home, in Layton, Utah. He returned to our Heavenly Father's care peacefully, January 12, 2023, in Bountiful, Utah.
He graduated from Ogden High School in June 1946 and joined the Navy in July. He had basic training at San Diego and was sent to Treasure Island and he then graduated from the Navy Electronics School. He joined the Pacific fleet, first on the USS McCaffery and then on the USS Perkins, both Destroyers. He went to Eniwetok on the Perkins for the atomic bomb tests of 1947. While there, he witnessed 3 atomic bomb explosions. He was discharged with honor from the Navy in 1948. Carl learned many valuable lessons in these Navy years, as well as getting his schooling which would build his career.
In 1949 he met a cute red headed girl at a Stake Gold and Green Ball, Sharon Stanger. He knew immediately, he wanted to know her better, and they were married in August of 1949. A year later they moved to Redondo Beach California. They later moved to Rose Park, Utah, but their final home was in Bountiful, Utah. Carl worked with a number of companies, including, Hughes Aircraft, Eimac, Litton and then the University of Utah as a research engineer in Electrical Engineering. He stayed at the University for 27 years. He earned the Outstanding Staff Award in the College of Engineering in 1985.
Carl and Sharon raised 7 children: Gayle (Robin) Gillespie, Salt Lake City, Utah; Dean (Vickie) Turnblom, Rigby, Idaho; Jean (Gordon) Brunson, Broomfield Colorado; Bruce (Anita) Turnblom, Saratoga Springs, Utah; Bryan (Kristi) Turnblom, Clearfield, Utah; Scott Turnblom, West Jordan, Utah, and Todd (Karen) Turnblom, Centerville, Utah. They have 28 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. Two sisters Ester and Florence, one brother Sylvan and two grand-children preceded him in death.. His brother Grant Turnblom (Sherry) lives in Provo, Utah.
Carl was a very special person, with an interest in everything around him. He was always willing to help others and has a talent for solving problems. Everything was a hobby for Carl especially building things, being outdoors, and working with his computer.
Carl was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints and served in many callings. Carl has been an inspiration of integrity, dedication, obedience and service to others. He lived as he taught, by example. He has instilled these qualities in his children as well. We will truly miss him, his wisdom, his words of counsel and his hugs. We love you dad. Well done, thou good and faithful servant, welcome home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 20, 2023 at the Val Verda 6th Ward, 2651 South 500 West, Bountiful, where a viewing will be held from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment - Bountiful City Cemetery.
