Caroline Alice Garner Phelps peacefully passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family, on August 19, 2017. She was born February 13, 1931 to Arthur and Nellie Garner, in Batley, Yorkshire England. Carrie joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in 1947 and served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She met Merrill Tingey Phelps, while he was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Batley, Yorkshire. He baptized her younger brother, Norman. Carrie immigrated to The United States on December 6, 1952 where she reunited with Merrill. They fell in love and were married on a snowy Spring day, April 9, 1953 in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Together they had 7 children. Gar, Neldena, David (Teri), Ferrill (Connie), Jan (Pam), Milinda (John) and Darin (Amanda). They were blessed with 33 grandchildren, with one more on the way. And 51 great grandchildren, with three more on the way. She had many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Carrie was a talented artist. She enjoyed creating gorgeous ceramics, oil painting, knitting, embroidery and crocheting. She made countless beautiful, handmade gifts for her family and friends over the years. She dedicated her life to her husband, children and family. She was a great cook. Carrie always made Holidays extra special for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never showed partiality towards any child. Each one was important to her and loved the same. She always wanted things equal, even down to dividing the candy in the Christmas piñata. Carrie was very loving and accepted everyone with open arms, she always had room in her heart for more family members and grandkids, and she always made everyone feel welcome.
Carrie passed away on August 19, which would have been Merrill’s 88thbirthday. A sweetending to their love story on Earth, which we know will continue for Eternity in Heaven. Carrie is preceded in death by the love of her life, Merrill Phelps, her parents, Arthur and Nellie Garner. Her brothers, Norman and Peter Garner. Her sister, June Sinnott. Her grandson, Jeremy John Wirthlin, great grandson Blaze Zarco Willams and great granddaughter Lilliana Caroline Abdulameer. She is survived by her brother John (Hazel) Garner, 2 sister in laws, Anne and Joyce Garner. Merrill’s siblings, Kathleen (David), Eddie (Carolynn) and Jerry (Corlis), her seven children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the Centerville 19th Ward, 900 South 400 East, Centerville, Utah. Friends and family may call the evening of Friday, August 25, 2017 between 6pm and 8 pm at Russon Mortuary, 295 N Main St, Bountiful, and Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30 am at the church prior to services.
