NORTH SALT LAKE, UT- Charles Richard Hughes, Jr., 92, beloved father, grandfather and friend passed away August 19, 2015. Born March 24, 1923 to Charles R. Hughes, Sr. and Mary L. Wise in Coatesville, PA. Married Ann Wiley of Anna, Illinois on October 19, 1945. Solemnized on June 27, 1961 in the St. George LDS Temple. Converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in December 1958. He served in three bishoprics and three high councils, as a branch president and district president, as High Priest Group Leader, executive secretary, Wood Badge beaded scout master, and many years in scouting. He was a Bountiful Temple organist and veil worker. He and Ann served a full-time 2 year Family History Mission. Charles enlisted in the Army during WW II and was a decorated combat infantryman of the 95th Infantry Division serving several months as a first scout spearheading Patton's Third Army. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant and served as a squad leader until being seriously wounded on April 12, 1945 when his unit was mopping up a German SS division in the Ruhr Valley, Germany. He spent 34 months in Army hospitals and was a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Disabled American Veterans. Charles graduated from Penn State University as a member of Phi Mu Alpha music honorary society, was a public school music supervisor in the shadows of Penn State. He later represented Penn State in the seven northwest counties of Pennsylvania as a district representative and retired after 35 years as an insurance agent. Preceded in death by his parents, and children-Gregory Neil of Erie, PA and Vickie Lewis of Grantsville, UT. Survived by his wife, Ann; children, Charles R. Hughes, III (Judy) of Monroe, LA; Terry D. Hughes of North Salt Lake, UT; Scott W. Hughes (Veronica) of Phoenix, AZ; Mary Jephson of Albuquerque, NM; Jeanine Colvin (David) of Bountiful, UT; 31 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 24, 2015 at 11a.m. at the North Salt Lake Parkway Stake Center, 55 East 350 North, North Salt Lake, UT. Friends may call Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, and Monday morning one hour prior to services at the Church. Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd., Bluffdale.
