Cleo Lucille Moss

April 16, 1924 — June 7, 2017

Cleo Lucille Lund Moss passed away June 7, 2017 in Bountiful Utah.  She was born April 16, 1924, the third daughter of Leroy & Ione Lund.  The Lund family lived in Clarion, UT  (just outside of Gunnison UT) at the time she was born.  They were farmers, living in a home without running water or electricity, and as such, Cleo was taught to work at an early age caring for the chickens, cows and sheep and helping out on the farm.  Work is something she did all her life.

She attended a 2 room schoolhouse for 1st though 3rd grade in Clarion and elementary and middle school in Gunnison. The family moved to Woods Cross when she was 16 in the summer of 1940, and finished her schooling at Davis High School.

She met and married her husband, David Claude Moss, in May 26, 1943 and they were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple November 14, 1952.  They were the parents of 5 children:  Darrell Lew, David Stewart, Claudia Ann, Janette Shauna, and Judith Lucille.

As a youth, her parents taught her and her sisters to play musical instruments, the violin, piano, clarinet, and baritone.  Her father played the cornet so they actually had their own little music group, playing at different events and functions around Clarion and Gunnison. Cleo was the violinist, later learning the cornet and was able to march with the Gunnison High School in the 24th of July Parade in Salt Lake City.

Cleo was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She served in many callings but the one dearest to her was of the music program.  She sang in the ward choirs and led the music in YMIA, Primary, Relief Society and Sacrament Meetings.  She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for 70 years, and once again, was the song leader for many of them.

She spent her working career first and foremost as a mother, raising her children and also caring for her father, and many times, helping with the grandkids.  She worked at Cudahy Meat Packing and during the war at Hill Air Force Base.  She baked bread at Clinton’s Bakery (which is now Gregory’s Clinton Wheat Shop) and later was a clerk in the store.   She finished her working years at Beehive Clothing Mills, starting as a seamstress on LDS garments and ending as an inspector and supervisor in their production area. Here again, she would be found leading the music in the Monday morning devotionals held at Beehive Clothing Mills.

She will be greeted by her husband (Claude Moss), parents (Ione and Leroy Lund), 2 sisters, (Margaret Stanley and Katherine White), daughters (Claudia Hyland and Judy Ray) and son in law (Lynn Ray) who preceded her in death.  She is survived by her children:  Darrell (Becky) Moss of Centerville, Stewart (Rose) Moss of Sparks, NV, Shauna (Reese) Peters of Woods Cross, and son in law, Craig Hyland, 22 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, & 5 great-great grandchildren.

Services to be held Saturday June 10, 2017 at 1:00 pm, visitation 11:45-12:45, at Woods Cross 7th Ward LDS Chapel (2064 South 800 West, Woods Cross, UT).  Interment Lakeview Cemetery, Bountiful, UT
