Clyde S. Haslam
1929-2012
Clyde passed away at home after short decline after 82 years of great health. Clyde was born in April of 1929. He was the little brother of Scott and LaRue Haslam, and the big brother of Patsy, Doug and Shauna Haslam. His parents, Reed and Florence raised their kids through the rough years of the depression, and they got by with a lot of hard work and thrift, and the mutual support of the extended family all rowing together. Clyde started out delivering newspapers and stashing his earnings where his mom could find them to make ends meet, but he didn’t mind. He could fling a paper from his bicycle like a frisby and never miss the front porch. He said the trick was in the folding of the paper. He graduated from West High School where he was active in the band and in a quartet singing barbershop (a roll he and the other three members repeated at their fifty year reunion.) Clyde served in the Army band in 1947 in post war Bavaria and returned home to help his brother build a house on the river for his parents, and then met and married Elizabeth Bell in 1952. Clyde started his career cutting meat in grocery stores when he was a 14 year old when most all the slighty older young men were at war. He stayed in that profession his working life, and he managed meat departments for Safeway, Albertsons, Mr. J’s, and Food-for-Less, and he was known for his beautiful whistling while he worked. He was a favorite of the elderly ladies in the avenues when he ran the Albertsons meat department on Second south and 5th east back in the 60’s. Clyde and Beth loved to bowl and golf with their crowd which included many family members, and they cherished these friendships. Thank you Gerry, Ruth, Suzie, Bob, LaRue, Midge, Vern and the rest of the Gang for many happy times. Clyde lost Beth in 1992, and found Bev, his companion and vacation partner. Clyde loved to spend time with his kids and grandkids and his 6 great grandchildren. Clyde is survived by his son Mark (Terri) daughter Lisa Hartman, and his sisters Pat and Shauna, sisters in law Muriel and Jeanene and his life-long friend and eventual Brother in law, Bob (Strash) Sessions. He is preceded in death by his wife, Beth, his son Kent , brothers Scott and Doug Haslam and sister LaRue Sessions.
