Conrad "Jay" Petersen

August 18, 1951 — March 9, 2019

Conrad Jay Petersen was reunited with his beloved wife, Cherie, when he passed away in his home on March 9, 2019.

Jay was born in Salt Lake City, UT to Elwood Petersen and Hazel Smith on August 18, 1951, the fourth of five children. Raised in Sandy, he spent his days riding his bike throughout the valley with his friends and siblings in a time when life was simpler and candy cost a penny. During his days at Jordan High School, Jay discovered he had an aptitude for woodworking.  He later developed his skills into a true love for finish carpentry while working at Kraftsman Kitchen in Salt Lake City.  This love would then lead to a lifelong career as a general contractor where Jay was able to exemplify his abilities through building custom homes in the Davis County area.  When not on the job site, you could find Jay creating smaller, more intricate pieces which his friends and family still cherish to this day.

After graduation, Jay joined the Air Force where he served as a medic and would later remind his kids at various times in their lives that he was a “doctor”. During his service and while living on the Avenues in Salt Lake City, he met Cherie Layne and was immediately smitten. Jay and Cherie were married on February 15, 1974 and later found themselves in Farmington, UT where they established their family and their life together. On November 19, 2005, their family was sealed for Time and All Eternity in the Bountiful Utah Temple.

Jay’s family meant everything to him.  He spent many weekends taking them camping and fishing while teaching them to love and appreciate the outdoors.  In his later life, Jay spent his time caring for his son Cody, attending the temple, and doting on his five grandchildren, who loved their “Paka”.  He lived his life for those he loved and was an example to all around him of kindness, generosity, and purity of heart.

Jay was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cherie, and his parents, Elwood and Hazel Petersen. He is survived by his four children, Conrad (Whitney), Molly Gudjenov (Latchezar), Jesse, and Cody.  He will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren – Halika, Brooklyn, Samuel, Danielle, and Sophie.  He is also survived by his four siblings.

A viewing will be held Friday, March 15, 2019 for friends and family at Russon Brothers Mortuary located at 1941 North Main Street in Farmington from 6:00-8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 347 South 200 West in Farmington.  A viewing will be held prior to the funeral service from 9:30-10:30 am.
