Corine Loraine Sayler

Corine Loraine Sayler, eminent Utah educator, friend and aunt passed away on March 8, 2017 at North Davis Hospital due to an extended illness.  She was born July 4, 1947 in Ely, Nevada to Donald Alexis and Violet Lenore Sayler.  She attended school in Nevada, Idaho and Washington before graduating from High School in American Fork, Utah.  Corine began at Brigham Young University in Pre-Med and transferred to the University of Utah where she received a B.S in Home Economics in 1972.  In 1990 Corine was awarded a Masters of Education from Utah State University.  Additional graduate work was done at University of Utah, Idaho State and Ball State in Indiana, where she helped work on decoding the human genome.

Corine’s work experience ranged from domestic help to teaching A.P. Biology; from being a high school Administrator to editing educational texts for Gib Smith Publishing Company.  Assignments to prestigious committees and research groups were a common occurrence during  Corine’s professional life.  Corine was recognized as an outstanding educator who developed programs and curriculums designed to improve the success of students and facilitate teachers’ ease in using them.  She was adept at writing and overseeing grants to allow schools to implement these programs.  She was frequently given awards and commendations for her work.  In other words, Corine had all the tools necessary to be an outstanding educator.

Corine was not afraid to dig in the dirt or shovel horse manure to help a friend or an animal.  When she was able to do so, nothing gave her more enjoyment that planting in her yard.  At home, Corine was a wonderful seamstress who was always sewing a wedding dress or special outfits.  She was known for her many quilts, paintings, furniture sets painted or refinished.  Above all she was a phenomenal cook who taught classes in her neighborhood and for friends and family and developed many original recipes.  A party at Aunt Corine’s was always something to be looked forward to with great anticipation.

Corine participated in the Oakridge Ward of the LDS Church and contributed her knowledge and time.  She attended the Temple as often as possible and was very interested in Family History and worked at it diligently. 

If Corine had one special attribute, it would be that she truly loved the people around her, whether they were family or students.  She was always concerned with their success in life on a continuing basis.  It was a special moment when she was able to meet and interact with families of former students later in life.  Her concern for her students never stopped at the classroom door but continued throughout life. 

Corine loved pithy but true sayings by which she chose to live her life.  “The only thing you can change is your attitude.”  “Enjoy everyone you meet.  They have something you need to learn.” “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away.”  All of these are to be found in Corine’s life.

Corine is survived by her longtime friend Kamille Nielsen; sisters Rochelle Johnson, Twyla Henderson, Faith Perkins, sister-in-law Sonja Sayler and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews who loved Aunt Corine dearly; her two horses and her puppy dog. Proceeding her in death were her parents, brother Wesley Sayler and niece Trisha Perkins.  During her lifetime, Miss Sayler’s intellect, faith and passionate caring for others, enriched and changed for better the lives of the thousands who were fortunate enough to know her as family, friend, colleague and teacher.  Funeral services will be held Monday, March 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fairway Chapel, 1533 North 1075 West, Farmington.  A public viewing will be held Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N. Main St., Farmington from 6 to 8 pm. and Monday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.  Interment at the Centerfield Cemetery on March 14 at noon.
