Biography

Born July 15, 1924 Died January 2nd 2015. Craig Hammond Newcomb was born to Arthur F Newcomb and Mona Marie Craig along with his twin sister Barbara on July 15, 1924, in Vancouver WA. He graduated high school in 1942 from Camas High school. After graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was in training to use the big 50 caliber guns when the war ended and he remained in the Air Force reserves. He graduated from Cal Tech in 1948 in Aeronautical Engineering. He was called back into active duty for the Korean War where he served from August 1950 to August 1951 as the top gunner in a B-29 bomber.
Craig converted to the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and was baptized in the summer of 1949. He served faithfully in numerous callings including as a beloved Boy Scout leader and temple worker. In 1952 he married Barbara Tooley and had 4 children; Wilma Marie, Vaughn, Zara (Frank) Willis and Craig (Linda) Newcomb. Later divorced.
In 1966 Craig married Velma Ulm and had 3 daughters; Kimberly (Jim) Golden, Kelley (Scott) Mountford and Katie (Darrin) Wilkey. Sealed in the Manti, Utah Temple.
His main work experience was quality control and assurance for nuclear power plant refueling. He traveled the country working at 11 US nuclear power plants.
In 2006 he served an LDS mission with Velma in the Ohio, Cleveland Mission. Their primary assignment was records preservation including digital conversion of genealogical documents. They helped preserve documents that were over 100 years old.
Craig loved to fly small aircraft and flew search and rescue missions for the Civil Air Patrol in Colorado. He was an avid photographer and left his family great landscape photos to enjoy. In his younger years he was the roller-skating king and always seemed to know where the rinks were every place he traveled. He loved backpacking and mountain climbing and took the scouts on many memorable adventures. He played piano and later learned to play the organ.
Craig is survived by Velma, his 7 children, 22 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
