Craig Quibell Herget passed away peacefully on October 10, 2019 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born on May 20, 1944 to Lorenzo and Alberta Herget of Alberta, Canada. He had one brother, Shirl (Sheryl) Herget, and one sister, Carolyn Herget. He grew up in the farming community of Stirling, Alberta where his father was a wheat farmer. He was known for being a hard worker as a youth. He was often hired by neighbors to do odd jobs. As a child, Craig also spent time learning to play the piano and accordion. His children have fond memories of him pulling out his accordion each Christmas to play Christmas music.
After graduating from High School, Craig served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Franco/Belgian mission where he served for 2 ¾ years. Grades were very important to Craig which helped him earn some scholarship money. He used this money to attended BYU where he met his sweetheart, Linda Butterfield Herget. They married on June 2, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple just after Craig graduated from BYU with his bachelor’s degree in Business Finance. Linda and Craig had 6 children: Melissa (Jim) Smith, Randy (Heidi) Herget, Jill (Jeff) Huffaker, Heather Herget (deceased), Brian (Char) Herget, and Erin (Mike) Miller. Craig enjoyed his family and loved to tease and play tricks on them. He was blessed with 19 grandchildren and had his first great-grandchild on the way.
Craig was known for his kindness, work ethic, and sense of humor. He enjoyed working in a variety of jobs in the healthcare industry. One of his favorite jobs was working for the University of Utah School of Medicine as an administrator of the Orthopedic Department. While there, he enjoyed coordinating orthopedic conferences at different locations throughout the US. All who worked for him knew him as a kind and fair leader. With a heavy heart, he took an early retirement from the University of Utah in 2006 after having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years earlier.
Craig and his wife enjoyed retirement by traveling as much as they could. They found a real love for cruising and went as often as they could. They cruised anywhere from Hawaii to the Meditereanian. They also enjoyed RV camping and spent most of the summers up at Camper World in Coalville. In his spare time, Craig enjoyed learning how to whittle and was able to whittle a nativity that will be cherished by his family. He also loved to try all sorts of new wood projects. Although, his family suspects that he most loved all the power tools he needed to complete his projects.
Craig loved to be with people and enjoyed spending many evenings playing cards with friends. Craig will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a true friend to many as well as a great husband, father and grandfather.
A viewing will be held in honor of Craig on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Country Lane Chapel and on Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 9:30-10:30 am. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 11:00 at the Country Lane Chapel: 24 S. Country Lane, Fruit Heights, Utah 84037. He will then be interred at the Midway Cemetery in Midway, Utah.
