Cyrene Marie Worley Baker

September 16, 1916 — June 20, 2016

Cyrene passed away at the age of 99 on June 20, 2016. Her spirit will be carried on by her three surviving children, Linn, Jerry and Colleen, 17 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her eternal sweetheart Linn C. Baker and her youngest daughter, Diane Williams.
Born September 16, 1916, Cyrene was raised in Arimo, Idaho on a farm homesteaded by her father, George Worley. Her mother, Marie Kohler Worley, died when she was five years old. She was then blessed with a wonderful stepmother. Cyrene met her husband Linn at the White City Dance hall in Ogden and married him six weeks later. The couple was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1940.
A mother and grandmother at heart, Cyrene always placed the needs of her family above her own. One of her and Linn’s favorite joys was to visit relatives on Sunday afternoons. Many times, the visits ended with ice cream at Farr’s in Ogden.
Cyrene was the definition of Grandma. The home she created was a sanctuary where all were welcome. Her grandchildren remember many family dinners and sleep-overs at grandma’s house. Her rolls and apple pies where cherished by all. Cyrene was very competitive; she loved playing all kinds of games with her family – – and most often won!!
It was never a surprise to learn that the church callings Cyrene accepted always involved service to others. She was active with her church callings late into her 90's.
Having been brought up during the depression, both Cyrene and Linn were very frugal – they lived the motto “a penny saved is a penny earned.” Making good financial decisions, taking risks at the right time, and working hard all contributed to their financial success. This allowed them to be very generous, often helping their family.
Cyrene offered unconditional love to her family. She was always accepting of their beliefs, even if she did not share them. Because of this unconditional love, her family knew they could enter her home and be fully themselves.
Her family attributes Cyrene’s long life and good health to her devotion to exercise and good nutrition. When she was in her 90's, rather than let us park in a handicap spot, she would make us park in the furthest spot from the door so she could get her exercise. This stubborn refusal to use her age as an excuse allowed her to live in her home of 53 years until just a few months ago.
During her final days, the devotion from members of our family, as well as the service from the staff at both Legacy House and Aspire Hospice, was inspiring and greatly appreciated.
Cyrene’s blunt common-sense advice and beauty will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, where friends and family may call from 11:45 a.m. -12:45 p.m. prior to services.
