Darrell was a kind man who loved his family and friends. He loved people and could start a conversation with anybody. He loved his children, but his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his special joy.
He was born to Raymond Arlow and Wilma Porter Oborn on February 8, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His family moved to Bountiful, Utah in 1941. He earned his eagle rank in scouting the same day as his father Arlow and his brother Gordon. He graduated from Davis High School in 1950. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. When his training was completed he was sent to Mildenhall Airbase in England where he cooked for hundreds of Airmen. He attained the rank of staff sergeant.
While in England, he met Betsy Ford at an LDS Branch in distant Norwich. They were later married in Norwich in 1953. In 1954 they had their first child and returned to Utah.
Betsy and Darrell built their home in Bountiful in1959 with 4 kids and soon one more on the way. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1961. Darrell and Betsy are founding members of the Bountiful 25th Ward, and helped build the chapel near their home.
Darrell worked for many years in sales of tractor parts, insurance, heating systems, plumbing and hardware. Later he worked in and managed warehouses for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Granite School District. He also usually had a second job managing fast food or as security for the Salt Palace.
He prided himself with his teaching skills and working with youth in the church. He would develop examples to make lessons relevant. He and Betsy served as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, they also served as Missionaries at The Willey Handcart Historic Site in Wyoming. Darrell’s Great-Great Grandfather was a part of the Willie Hand Cart Company. Later they served as service missionaries in The Temple Square Mission. He was an active member of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Darrell recently served as a worker in the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples.
Darrell passed away on January 25, 2022 in Bountiful, Utah. Family members welcoming him on the other side are his Father and Mother, his brother Gordon, sister-in-law Millie and granddaughter Jana. He is survived by his wife, Betsy, sister Jean Oborn, brother-in-law John (Karma) Parlett, sister-in-law Sally Parlett; his children, Ralph (Kathy) Oborn, Paul (Carolyn) Oborn, Darrelyn (Dee) Davis, Char (Greg) Wells, Vaughn (Marianne) Oborn; he takes special pride in his 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.
