David Thomas Cates, 89, passed away of natural causes on Sunday, July 10, 2011, in Bountiful, Utah. David was the second of five children born to Ruth Carter and David Thomas Cates, Sr. in Plainview, Texas, on July 26, 1921. During his early years, the family resided in several different communities in Texas and New Mexico as his father searched for work. David graduated from Hobbs High School, Hobbs, New Mexico in 1939. He served in the United States Army Air Force from August 1940 until he received an honorable discharge in October 1945. On July 27, 1943, David married Dorothy Lucille Johnson of Springville, Utah, and the marriage was later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS. Temple on October 21, 1960. After living in Hobbs for a short time, the family finally settled in Salt Lake City. They were the parents of four children. Dorothy passed away January 6, 1990. David married Anna Christensen of Salt Lake City in the Salt Lake Temple on September 4, 1990. David became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having been baptized in the Salt Lake Tabernacle in August 1959. Prior to his baptism, he served as a super Scoutmaster for eight years and influenced for good the lives of many young men. He valiantly served in various other positions. As a member of his stake high council he enjoyed the assignment of overseeing the operation of the Hillside Stake cattle ranch; he was bishops counselor and bishop; and also served in the Salt Lake and Bountiful LDS Temples. He was a missionary. Being a convert himself, he wanted others to enjoy the blessings of the gospel. With his wife, Dorothy, he served a leadership mission in the Salt Lake Liberty Stake. He and Anna served together in the Oklahoma Oklahoma City Mission. He was always a faithful home teacher. David served a term as president of the Sugar House Lions Club, and also gave hours of service to family, friends and neighbors. David rose from very humble beginnings to a successful career as a building contractor, often taking construction jobs even without so much as a written contract. He was renown for his honesty and integrity and generosity. David is survived by his wife, Anna of Bountiful, and his children: Kathleen Cates (A. Patrick) Rose of Layton, Michael Thomas Cates of Woods Cross, David Thomas IV (Leslie McCullough) Cates of Salt Lake City and Carolyn Cates (Kreed) Lovell of Henderson, Nevada. His survivors also include 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren plus two on order. He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy, parents, siblings: Mahota, Carrol, Derwood, and Delbert; and by a great granddaughter, Heidi Cates. A viewing will be held Friday, July 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 16, at the Edgehill Ward, 1575 South 1500 East in Salt Lake City, at 12:00 noon, with a viewing prior to services from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the staff at Barton Creek Assisted Living Center, to the hospice nurses from CNS, and to any and all others who have assisted at this time.
