David J. Haslam, Jr.

David Jeremy Haslam, Jr, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on February 8, 2021. Dave was born on July 14, 1929, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to David Jeremy Haslam, Sr. and Erma Ruth Lees. He was married and sealed to his sweetheart and love of his life, Norma Jean Deaton on May 17, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple.  Dave and Norma have six children whom they love and cherish.

Dave grew up in Salt Lake City where he and his cousin Jack kept everyone on their toes with their endless pranks. Although he was fun-loving, he also knew the value of hard work and education. He was a proud graduate of West High School. He became an avid Utah fan (football being his favorite) while attending the University of Utah where he received his Juris Doctorate degree. While working on his degree, he attended school full time, worked full time, and was a dedicated father to a growing family of six children. As an attorney, he worked with the US Postal Service Transportation Management Center in labor and contract law. He also loved his country and served for 40 years in the Air National Guard where he earned the rank of Colonel.

Dave was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served a mission, February 1949 to February 1951, in the Southwest Indian Mission.  He loved his time in the mission field and the opportunity to work with the Navajo people. He also served in a variety of callings, such as Scoutmaster, High Priest Group Leader, Temple Worker and Bishop.

Family was very important to Dave. His first concern was always for his eternal companion Norma. He set a wonderful example to his children of what a husband and father should be. He and Norma loved their family and created ways to build family unity and closeness. Children and grandchildren had fun camping, boating and learning to water ski at Pineview Reservoir. Lake Powell vacations with the children and spouses hold many memories–from the scare of a sudden thunderstorm almost capsizing the ski boat to the thrill of dad getting mom out in the water to swim. The boat bore a fitting name–“Memories”–to represent the fun family had on these vacations. Fun times were spent down on “Blue Mountain” camping and hunting–archery in the summer and rifle in the Fall.  Holidays were another time of family togetherness with family breakfasts, barbecues and volleyball in the backyard.  Dave and Norma spent many hours (years) building a family cabin where their family could be together. This was a true labor of love.

Dave is survived by his wife, Norma, four daughters, Kathy (Tom), Colleen, Debbie (Dan), Sandi (Paul) and two sons, Steve (Sue), and Mike (Charla), 36 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and sisters Beverly (Alan) and Marilyn (Larry). He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lois, and brother-in-law Alan. He was also preceded in death by his life-long friends Bill, Dave, Ernie, and Jack. (The Bachelors)
