David Loyd Shallenberger

January 11, 1956 — May 24, 2019

David Loyd Shallenberger, age 63, a resident of Bountiful, Utah since 1999 and formerly of Harmonsburg, PA, died peacefully on May 24, 2019 surrounded by his loving wife Vaun Zell and family, following a long battle with kidney disease and cancer.

David was born in Warren, Trumball County, Ohio on January 11, 1956, son of the late Austin Shallenberger and Alice Louise (Huscroft) Jodon. He was one of eight children.

David graduated from Cambridge Springs, PA in 1974. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a LDS mission in Independence, Missouri from 1975-1977.   He then attended Boise State University and obtained a degree in Business Administration and Environmental Studies.  

David first married Sherry Coleman in 1980 and they had four children: Jason Shallenberger, Amber Maurer, Moriah Pease, and Carrie Acker.  David was self-employed as owner of American Home Heating in Harmonsburg, PA from 1980 until 1990.  He was then employed at Meadville Moving & Storage and then at Ferrell Gas, where he was injured in an accident and became disabled.  David did not let illness slow him down.  He was knowledgeable about many things. He could fix, repair, and build anything.  He loved music, dancing, cooking, movies, boating, and traveling. 

In 1999, David moved to Utah and started his own Industrial Cleaning business.  In 2002, he married Vaun Zell Cox on November 26, 2002 in the Bountiful Temple.  In addition to his wife, Vaun Zell, he is survived by his four children, Jason Shallenberger (Sandy) of Pittsburgh, PA, Amber Maurer of Taylorsville, UT, Moriah Pease (Jeremy) of Kaysville, UT and Carrie Acker (Jeff) of Linesville, PA. David is further survived by 13 grandchildren: Alex Shallenberger, Levi Acker, Sean Acker, Faye Acker, Corbin Maurer, Talon Stucki, Tyler Pease, Kylieann Pease, Ethan Pease, Nicole Garubba, Tina Garubba, Matthew Garubba, and Julie Garubba, and two great-grandchildren, Victor and Vincent Garrubba. David is also survived by three sisters, Suzanne DeSantis (Jim) of Girard, Ohio, Austa Morris (Carl) of El Paso, Texas and LuAnn Knickerbocker (Dan) of Conneautville, PA, and one brother Walter Jodon (Susan) of Ashtabula, Ohio, and two step-sisters Cindy LaRochelle of Nevada, and Linda Sue Bucklew of Arizona, and his good friends, Mike Green, Nick Green, and Grant Besinger, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by an infant sister Karey Shallenberger, a half-sister Sandra (Brickley) Braham and a half-brother, Jack Brickley.

David endured many health challenges during his life.  The family extends their deep appreciation to those who assisted David during his years on Dialysis at Intermountain Utah Dialysis, IMC hospital Kidney Transplant team and Oncology unit for treatment of his ongoing illnesses and multiple stays, and to Avalon Care Center and CNS Hospice in Bountiful, Utah. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Bountiful 12th Ward, 1476 North 300 West, Bountiful, Utah with a viewing from 9:45 to 10:45 am, at the church prior to the service.  Interment at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery.
