Biography

BOUNTIFUL, UT- John David Keveren Scholes, (79) passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Dec 22, 2012 with family by his side following a 6 month courageous fight with aggressive prostate cancer.
David was born near Logan, Riverheights, Utah, on a spring day, March 14, 1933 to Walter Adams and Gladys (Keveren) Scholes. He has two brothers- W. Kay, Ernest, and three sisters-Beatrice, Virginia, and Margie. They moved to Rigby, Idaho when he was 3 years old and grew up on a farm 4 miles to the east. He attended Rigby High School graduating with Honors in 1951. David was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After completing basic training he married his kindergarten sweetheart, Jo Ann Burtenshaw of Rigby, Idaho, on November 25, 1953 in the Idaho Falls Temple. He attended Ricks College, Utah State University and Idaho State University. He farmed on his father’s Rigby farm as well as working at the Riverview Hospital for 10 years and then at the INEL for 20 years as a Medical Lab Technician. David was an officer in the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union. David and Jo Ann raised 7 children; 5 boys and 2 girls. After Jo Ann passed away on Nov 23, 2002, he found the second love of his life, Sharen Dee Swendsen Martin. They were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on June 06, 2003 and sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple, August 12, 2004. David loved Sharen’s 5 children like his own. He was the quiet provider.
David was an avid Master Gardener and chartered Boy Scout leader for 70 years. He was award the Silver Beaver from the Grand Teton Council in 1984. His father- Walter A., Brother Kay, two sisters, Virgina and Margie, and son Greg are also Silver Beavers. He attended Woodbadge and was a Beaver. He was very proud to help and has 1 Eagle Scout son (Paul) and 8 Eagle Scout grandsons (John, Jared, Tyson, Colby, Nick, Nathan, Andrew, Brayden).
David’s hobbies include his 12 Sons and Daughters, 27 Scholes and 7 Martin grandchildren and 27 Scholes and 2 Martin great grandchildren. He is described by his children as “Gramps” who was Gentle, Patient, Kind and Loving. If a picture is worth a thousand words, he left billions of memories by the photographs he took of family. But his greatest love was the garden dirt and the produce and flowers it provided. Jo Ann & Sharen were Saints for canning the food dad would bring in from the garden. Dad especially loved Sharen’s pickles, however she has just announced her retirement now that dad is gardening in Heaven.
Ultimately the gospel of Jesus Christ was supreme in his life and deeds. He served as a financial clerk, but traded to be a Scoutmaster. He served as a Seventy, Ward mission leader, Home teacher and Bishopric Member. In Arizona, he served as the Stake Welfare Farm Gardener which provided many the opportunities to work and benefit from their labors.
He was innovative, thrifty, and a fixer. He lived the Scout Law everyday and exemplified the power and influence of goodness. There are many worldly accolades one can receive in this life but no honor is greater than to have your children love and admire you! Dad, you have it All.
