David Winston Shutt, aged 94, of Farmington, Utah, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on December 1st, 2024 in his home, in the loving care of his family.
David was born October 26th, 1930 to Albert Edward Shutt and Doris May Whitaker in Salt Lake City, Utah.
David lost his father when he was only 15 years old, but still had enough time with his dad to create some of his favorite memories. David's love of travel and baseball were rooted in the cross-country train rides he would go on with his dad where they would go to watch the Brooklyn Dodgers play in New York. David would go on to play in local baseball leagues growing up even though he was, by his own admission, not a good hitter (for which he blamed his poor eyesight) but enjoyed playing outfield.
Following David's high school graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served during the Korean War on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer as a boiler operator. David's service took him around the Pacific where he enjoyed visiting new places like Hong Kong and Japan. He was able to continue his amateur career as baseball outfielder on the flight deck of the Boxer, playing with his shipmates.
It was during his service in the Navy that he married Helen Doezie, who he had started dating in High School. The two were married on November 10th, 1952, in the Salt Lake City Temple, where Elder LeGrand Richards of the Council of the Twelve performed the ceremony.
David chose not to reenlist but was always proud of his military service. He was often recognizable by his "USS Boxer CV-21" hat and would not hesitate to share stories of his time on the Boxer with any willing listener.
David loved Helen and their children, and as grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along he loved them as well. Everyone felt like they had a special relationship with David, and in truth, they did. His kind, genuine and good-humored nature earned him many life-long friends.David worked for AT&T as a technical specialist, and was able to enjoy many broadcasts from the Tabernacle Choir to BYU football games from behind the scenes as he ensured the show went on without problems or interruption. Following his career at AT&T, David became a master electrician. The friends he made from work he continued to joyfully visit throughout his life. David was generous with his time and knowledge and wouldn't hesitate to help someone in need. This ability to help was evidenced by Helen, who would comment on the number of callers requesting his number while working as a PBX operator.
David always loved working in the yard. He wanted his yard to be like the temple grounds and he succeeded in creating a beautiful space for his family to gather and spend time together. He also maintained a vegetable garden that produced as much produce as he was able to give away. He loved gardening to the end of his life, and was tending to the yardwork even a couple weeks ago.
David is survived by five of his children, Lynn and Carol Shutt, Sandra and Kelvin Porter, Dale Shutt, Carol and Kevin Petersen, and Ryan and Natalie Shutt and 15 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Helen Doezie Shutt and daughter Marcia Ann Shutt and daughter-in-law Reesalee Shutt.
