Dean Macfarlane, age 93, passed away December 21st, 2007 at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful from natural causes incident to age. He was born July 22nd 1914 in Cedar City, Utah, the eldest of six children of Erastus H. Macfarlane and Lillian Higbee Macfarlane. Dean married Verda Taylor of New Harmony, Utah, July 22, 1935 in Cedar City. They had three children born in Cedar City before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada and then to Layton, Utah in 1941. They later lived in Clearfield for over 20 years. He joined the war effort and worked at Hill Air Force Base until his retirement in 1973. During his years at Hill Field he visited many parts of the world and was very proud of his hitch as a civilian specialist in Vietnam during that conflict. A respected missile specialist, he also worked at Hercules Aerospace. Leaving Clearfield in 1962, Dean and Verda moved to Bountiful where they have resided since. Dean was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a faithful High Priest. He served as an ordinance worker and supervisor in the Salt Lake Temple for ten years. Dean and Verda also served two missions in Palmyra, New York. Dean was an avid hunter and fisherman and skillfully assembled dozens of custom fishing rods. Many family and friends are now the proud owners of handmade rods that bear his name. Numerous fish are also now more comfortable that he is no longer walking the banks of Utah and Wyoming streams. Another of his loves was gardening. He spent many hours tending to his exceptional roses and his raspberries, strawberries and tomatoes. Friends, neighbors and family were often the recipients of gifts of flowers, berries and tomatoes. Dean is survived by his wife of 72 years; two sons, Larry Dean Macfarlane Nancy, Orem; Michael C. Macfarlane Judy Kaysville; one brother, Clark Macfarlane, Clearfield; one sister, Mary MacDonald, Cedar City; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Myrlene Kimball McPherson; a sister, Eva Mertlich; two brothers, Lewis Macfarlane and Sinclair Macfarlane and his parents. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 28, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Woods Cross 3rd Ward Chapel, 1450 South 350 South in Bountiful. Friends and family may call Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and Friday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment-Bountiful City Cemetery. The family expresses a sincere gratitude to his physician, Dr. David Cope, to the nurses and staff at Community Nursing Services, Legacy House of Bountiful and Lakeview Hospital.
