DeForrest Smouse

DeForrest Smouse, 80, Centerville, Utah passed from this life on November 9, 2011 in Bountiful, Utah due to complications incident to age. He was born March 28, 1931 in Toadlena, New Mexico, the second of three boys, to Donald Robert and Frances Fern Smouse. When young, he moved with his family to the Borrego Pass Trading Post. He attended school in Toadlena, Kirtland and later Thoreau and Farmington, New Mexico. DeForrest attended high school and his first year of college at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. DeForrest is a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy from 1951-1954. He married Janice Yvonne Bloomfield in January 1954 in Mesa, Arizona. He attended New Mexico School of Mines, and later received his BS in Geology from BYU in 1957 and PhD in Geology in 1965. He was a Professor of Geology at BYU and Northern Arizona University, leaving that post to be a consulting geologist, which gave him the opportunity of traveling the world from Mexico to Africa and Russia. He served as President of Quinex Energy Corporation until his retirement. DeForrest spoke fluent Navajo, enjoyed rock hounding with his family, and loved researching family history. He was on the Centerville City Council and was twice a Bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he was much loved and admired by those he served. DeForrest is survived by Janice and eight children, Forrest (Susan), Kathleen (Mark), Shaleen (David), Russell (Liliana), Darleen (Erin), Cheryleen, Marleen, and Reed. Also survived by 30 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by parents, brothers, Lafe (2011) and George (2010), son, Merrill (2002), grandson, Nicholas (2000), and great-granddaughter, Aquira (2003). Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Centerville LDS Chapel, 2110 North Main Street. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m .at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, and Saturday morning 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will follow the service in Centerville City Cemetery.
