Donald DeWayne Carroll

March 1, 1941 — August 13, 2021

On Friday, August 13th, 2021, Donald DeWayne Carroll left for one final hike from this earth to heaven.

March 1, 1941, “Diamond” Don was born in International Falls, Minnesota, to Conrad “Buddy” Franz Carroll and Norma Eloise (Swenson-Carroll) Wreggitt.

Donnie lost his father during WWII, when his father was killed in action. He was raised in Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada from age 5, and also on Rainy Lake in Canada, where he helped to clear part of the land for Point O’Pines Camp in Redgut Bay.

Donnie served in the US Army as a PFC from 1961-1965. He graduated from Rainy River Community College in 1970 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from the University of Minnesota in June 1972. He worked for Boise Cascade Woodlands for 25 years as a Forester, a Forest Scaling Supervisor, Road Crew Supervisor and Supervisor in Forest Management. He enjoyed his work so much that he often said, “I can’t believe they pay me to do this.”

Donnie met his wife Helen when they were both serving in the US Army. They married on September 5, 1964, and after he returned from active duty in Germany, they lived in Salt Lake City for six months until they moved back to his hometown in Minnesota, where they had two children, Dawn and Jeremy. They moved back to Utah shortly after Don retired in 1996. After 4 years of retirement, Don went back to work, this time at Hill Air Force Base as an Assistant Supervisor and then Supervisor of the Expeditors in building 507 from 2000-2006.

Having worked as a Forester and helping his parents at Point O’Pines camp, Don loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed golfing, hiking, taking scenic drives or long, cross-country trips, planting trees in his yard or doing yard projects for his kids. No wonder he was called “The Energizer Bunny.”

Donald is survived by his wife Helen; children Margaret Freeberg-Cade, Dawn (Eric Johnsen), Jeremy (Brooke); grandchildren Rob (Sara), Sean (Hannah), Matthew, Abigail, Hallie and Ella; nine great-grandchildren and two grand-dogs; siblings: Gerald, Lynda, Brian, Bruce, Pete (Roy) and Joe (Ray). He was preceded in death by his father Conrad, mother Norma, sibling Tommy, and his stepfather William Wreggitt.

Donald accepted Jesus in 2010, and said he knew who his Savior was. He is much loved and will be greatly missed until we see him again.

Memorial services will be held at 10am on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Russon Mortuary, 1941 North Main Street, Farmington, Utah. A luncheon will follow the service at the pavilion at Heritage Park, 1562 Pinehurst Lane, Farmington, Utah.
