Donald Russell Dean passed away peacefully on March 23, 2017 in Bountiful, Utah, surrounded by his loving family.
Donald was born on April 4, 1939 in Manila, Utah to Heber Warren Dean and Beth Cardon Dean. The family moved to Beaver and then to Green River, Utah. Don graduated from Green River High School in 1957. He attended Utah State University and then the University of Utah, where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and enlisted in the Army ROTC. He later earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Utah.
He married Janice Kaye Bangerter on June 9, 1961 in the Salt Lake City Temple. His military service took him and Janice to Georgia, Massachusetts, and Texas. On completion of his military service, he started his 32-year career with the Federal Bureau of Reclamation. Don and Jan lived in Grand Junction, Colorado for three years, where his oldest two children were born. In 1968, the family moved to Bountiful, Utah, where four more children were born, and where he continued to live until his passing.
Don enjoyed reading, computers, and photography. He spent many hours digitally preserving old family photos. He loved electronics and built his own console TV. He was a handyman and could be counted on to help fix just about anything. Don was a man dedicated to his family. He took the family on numerous trips all over Utah and the United States. Don particularly loved trips to remote spots in Utah and often took more pictures of wildflowers than anything.
He was an active member of the LDS church, holding various positions in Sunday School and High Priests Group. He also compiled the ward newsletter for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Louise Hansen.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Janice; his children, Deborah (Paul) Young, Darren (Sheri), Douglas (Melissa), DeAnn (Ryan) Westergard, David (Lisa), and Donald J. (Catherine); 22 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Jim (Laura Young), sister, Julie (Dan) Watanabe, brother-in-law, Darl Hansen, sister-in-law, Betty McIlrath, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at both Legacy House and Brighton Hospice for their loving care of Don.
