Biography

Dorothy Gunn White
Armstrong

1919 – 2012

On August 23, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones, our dear sweet little mother began the third part of her eternal journey. After a two and a half year battle with Dementia she has joined her eternal companion, son, sister, mother and her father whom she had not seen since she was five years old. Mom was born June 25 1919 to George Edward White and Alice Gunn White in her grandmother’s home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the first of three children. At one month old she was taken back to her home in Metropolis, NV. Their home was a tent with a dirt floor. During the later part of 1924, when mom was 5 years old, they moved back to Salt Lake where her father passed away on March 15, 1925. Mom graduated from West High School in 1937 and went to work at Sears where she met her eternal companion Clifford Earl Armstrong. They were married on December 23, 1939, later solemnized on April 23, 1958 in the Salt Lake City Temple. He died December 14, 2003, nine days short of their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary. From this union came six children. On March 39, 1940 her mother married Franklin A. Devey. He brought three sisters and one brother into the family.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had several callings, her favorites were visiting teacher, secretary of the young women’s mutual, and ward librarian. She is survived by her three daughters: Darlene (Richard) Jones, Mesquite NV, Susan (Tom) West, Carol (Jeff) Coombs, daughter-in-law Patricia Armstrong, two sons Lynn and Kent all of Salt Lake City. Close family friend Lee Koseck, Brothers Don G. White, Floyd (Dowena) Devey, both Salt Lake City, sister Fay (Norman) Hansen, Green Mountain, UT. Also survived by 44 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews that she loved very much. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, son: C. Earl Armstrong Jr., sisters Loie (Lee) Larsen, Flora (Bill) Gheen, Fern (Leo) Soderstrom, and sister-in-law Barbara White.
