Dorothy Howell Hawkins

October 7, 1922 — January 12, 2013

Dorothy Howell Mumford Hawkins passed away January 12, 2013 in Bountiful, Utah at the age of 90. She was born in Blackfoot, Idaho on October 7, 1922 to Mary Eliza Radford and Lee Roy Howell. She grew up in Blackfoot as the youngest of six children (preceding her in death; Doran Howell, Callie Howell, Donia Ketchum, Leora Katseanes, and Roy Howell). Dorothy maintained a very close and loving relationship with her family throughout her life.
Dorothy graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1940. She attended Logan Agricultural College where she met and married William “Ward” Mumford in 1942 at the age of 19 and together they had three sons, David, Lee and John. She supported Ward through graduation from medical school at the University of Utah in 1952, and an internship in Greenville, CA. They then moved to Pocatello, ID where they lived for ten years. While there, Dorothy spent much of her time as a supporting wife, mother of three active boys, homemaker and close friend to many. In addition, she was an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary to the American Medical Association and throughout her life, was an active member of the LDS church, serving as Relief Society President, teaching Sunday School and serving in many other callings.
After Dorothy and Ward divorced in 1963, Dorothy attended cosmetology school and moved to Boise, ID with her three sons, where she opened and operated several “La Dors” beauty salons in the Boise area. While this was a new role for Dorothy, she worked hard and became a successful business woman supporting herself and her family for many years.
In 1974 Dorothy married Kenneth Hawkins. She described Ken as a kind and gentle man whom she loved very much. They worked together, attended church together and hosted countless gatherings for family and friends. Dorothy was an accomplished cook, consummate host, quintessential grandma and tireless and loving supporter of her family and friends. Her favorite thing in life was getting together with her beloved family. Dorothy was deeply loved by many and will be sorely missed.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth who passed away in 2006 and her son David who passed away in 2012 (survived by Margaret). Dorothy is survived by her sons Lee and John (Sandi), 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
