Dorothy Roxana Carter Huntsman, age 101, passed away on January 25, 2022, at home in Bountiful, Utah of causes incident to age. Dorothy was so looking forward to joining her dear companion, Dean, who had previously passed away 24 years ago, and meeting the Savior, whom she loved dearly.
Dorothy’s life began in Columbia, South Carolina, on July 12, 1920. Her parents were Jesse and Sarah Elizabeth (Butler) Carter. She was the fourth child of ten children. Life was hard for the Carter family living and growing up in the South. They moved often, experienced many hardships, lived through two World Wars and the Depression years, yet the one consistent thing in their life that helped them through most of these times, was the gospel of Jesus Christ. When Dorothy was about 8 months old, her parents were introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This new religion brought great strength to them and a renewed determination to build a strong family bond. Their goal was to receive the blessing of being sealed as an ‘eternal family’ in the Salt Lake City Temple in Utah. This goal was achieved just over two decades later, in the fall of 1942, when the last of the Carter family had migrated to Utah and Idaho.
Dorothy met her future husband through meeting Dean’s parents and being asked to write to their son while he was serving in the Army in New Guinea during World War II. Dorothy and Dean corresponded for 3 years before they officially met. On Dean’s return home to Idaho from service, he stopped in Salt Lake City, Utah to meet this beautiful southern gal he had been writing to. About 8 months later, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple, June 2, 1945.
Dean and Dorothy settled in a rural community in Idaho to raise potatoes, wheat, dairy cattle and eventually 7 children. Dorothy worked hard to support a farmer and dairyman and raise children. Her greatest joy was her family. Dorothy was often found taking meals or her delicious whole wheat bread, or a dessert to neighbors and family. She served in various positions in her callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and Dean were able to serve two missions together: One at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah; and the other at the Toronto, Ontario, Canada Temple. They also served together at the Boise, Idaho and Bountiful, Utah Temples. Dorothy loved to research and locate information about her ancestors, which she was actively involved in until the last few years of her life.
Survivors include her children: Brenda Kehoe, Craig & Debbie Huntsman, Mark & Tracy Huntsman, Lei Lani & Ardel Moffett, son-in-law, Ray Malott, and foster daughter Clara (Julian) Joe; 39 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Joseph Prows II, and sister-in-law, Nina Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her eternal companion, Dean; infant daughter, Cherrie; daughters and son-in-law, Laurie Malott, Dena & Thomas Rigby, four great-grandchildren, Trevin Huntsman, Koleena Bingham, Chase Barnedt, and Skylar Huffield; her parents, all her siblings and eight of their spouses, and all her husband’s siblings and spouses.
