DOUGLAS “DOUG” SUMMERS

1939-2019

Douglas Verrel Summers passed away on March 21st, 2019 at the age of 79.  He was born in Butte, Montana to Verrel Vernon Summers and Alene (Sessions) Summers on August 22nd, 1939.  In his youth his family moved back and forth between Montana and Idaho where he learned the value of hard work at a young age. He graduated from Ricks College with an Associate of Arts degree before he was called to serve a mission in the Great Britain mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1959 to 1961.

When he returned home from his mission he immediately enrolled at Brigham Young University where he met the love of his life Carolyn Campbell. They were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on June 16th, 1962.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Music from BYU in May of 1965.

He worked several jobs during his career, including: movie theater film projectionist during his high school years, typewriter repairman, general contractor, insurance salesman, textiles salesman, telecommunications salesman, and eventually as the Telecommunications Manager at Smith’s Food and Drug, where he retired. After his retirement, he also taught at the Clearfield Job Corps and was occasionally a substitute teacher for the Davis County School District.

He was very passionate about music and served many times as ward choir director and chorister.  He also sang barbershop with his brother Jess for over twenty-five years, first in the Beehive Statesmen chorus and later as one of the founding members of the Saltaires Show Chorus.  He traveled across the country to participate in international barbershop chorus competitions every year for more than 20 years.  He loved to write, especially short stories and poetry.  He also wrote and compiled his own family history, which he happily passed along to his friends and relatives.

He was an avid fan of BYU football and basketball and was a football season ticket holder for over forty years.  He also enjoyed golfing, camping, and travel, especially with Carolyn. They were able to visit many places around the world, including Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.

Doug is survived by his wife of fifty-six years Carolyn Summers, and their three children: son Scott (Stacey) Summers, daughter Nicole “Nikki” Boice, and daughter Stephanie Summers, as well as twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Carol Ann (Gary) Lee, sister-in-law Verda Summers, and sister-in-law Mary Summers. He was preceded in death by his parents Verrel and Alene Summers, his older brother Jesse Joseph Summers, and his younger brother Ronald Kenneth Summers.

A viewing with be held on Tuesday, March 26th from 6:00 – 8:00PM at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N. Main St., Farmington.  His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 27th at 11:00AM at the LDS Church building at 1955 S. 350 E. in Kaysville, with a second viewing that morning from 9:30 to 10:30AM at the church.
