Douglas Jacobson Hanks

November 23, 1930 — September 26, 2021

Douglas Jacobson Hanks, our loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Friend, passed away of natural causes on September 26th, 2021. At a healthy age of 90, Doug led a full and joyful life, surrounded by a large family and many friends who loved him dearly.

Doug was born on November 23, 1930, to Eva Elnora Jacobson and Douglas J. Hanks in Salt Lake City, Utah. A lover of music, his beautiful voice was developed during his years at South High School. Doug also attended the University of Utah. Soon after, Doug joined the United States Air Force and served in Korea as a Radio and Radar Technician during the Korean War. Following his military service and honorary discharge, Doug was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Northwestern States Mission. Doug married Marjorie Harris on June 9, 1958. Together they had four children, of which they raised in Davis County, Utah. Their marriage later ended in divorce. Doug married Joyce Carter on August 29, 1980, in the St George Temple. Doug later adopted Joyce’s four children and this newly joined family was lovingly sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple. Doug and Joyce together had three additional sons. Doug loved and cherished the opportunity to be the father of eleven children and frequently expressed how grateful he was to be their father. Doug took every opportunity to brag about his 5 and ½ Dozen children (5+6=11).

Doug was well known for his ability to fix anything and everything and loved working with his hands in his workshop. His expertise ranged from small to large, watches to automobiles. If he did not have the tools that were needed to complete the job, he would fabricate them. He never shied away from an opportunity to share this knowledge with his children, or anyone else who was willing to learn. His own work ethic, drive, desire to learn and to solve problems, was passed in one form or another to all his children.

There are three things that Doug loved more than anything in his life: His Savior, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and his wife and family.

Doug was a Spiritual Giant who loved and cherished his faith. He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a shining example to all, and a wonderful disciple of our savior Jesus Christ. He guided his family in word and in deed, showing his true faith not only by bearing his testimony, but by living it and providing a true example of Charity, Humility, Meekness and Love. Doug would always be the first to serve those in need and would drop anything to rush to the aid of others.

Doug is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joyce Carter, and his 11 children: Jorie Williams, Cory Hanks (Michelle), Troy Hanks (Becky), Tony Hanks (LeAnn), Christie Musgrave (Rob), Bradley Hanks (Jenny), Jennifer Holmes (Jeremy), Tracie Fletcher (Darrin), Jeremy Hanks (Breann), Justin Hanks (Krista) and Joshua Hanks (Melissa) and by his sister, Ruth Cardon. He is also survived by 44 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren (with several more of each on the way). This legacy he leaves behind, the family that surrounded him and looked to him as a provider, confidant, mentor, and friend, was dearly cherished and loved by Doug. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, LaFonda Hanks Grover, and Pauline Hanks Christiansen, and Son In-Law, Dennis Williams.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful 15th Ward building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1250 S Main Street, Bountiful, UT.  A viewing will precede the funeral at the church building from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.  Interment will take place at the Bountiful City Cemetery.

Services will be streamed live on Russon Mortuary & Crematory Facebook page and on this obituary page.
