Obituary for Douglas James Castleton
February 28, 1941 – January 27, 2022
Doug quietly slipped away early in the morning at his home on Thursday January 27th a few weeks shy of his 81st birthday.
Doug was born in Blackfoot, Idaho. He was the second of five siblings born to Leon Joseph Castleton and Elaine Jones of Malad, Idaho. His brothers and sisters remain his dearest friends.
He met Kathryn Stringam while attending Utah State University and they were sealed in the Cardston, Alberta Temple on September 11, 1963. Together they raised 12 children, all of whom would say they are his favorite.
INTERESTS:
Growing up Doug played several sports, participated in bands, sang in choirs and contributed much to the communities in which he lived.
Doug was well known as a performer. Many recall his performances in shows like Evita, South Pacific, and Fiddler on the Roof. We all loved watching Doug perform “If I were a Rich Man” which he continued to do for his family even once it was difficult for him to speak.
SERVICE IN COUNTRY:
In 1966, Doug was drafted to serve in the Army. He was assigned to the Commanding General’s office in Vietnam. And served until his honorable release in 1969.
SERVICE IN CHURCH:
As an active member of the Church or Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout his life, Doug loved learning and sharing the gospel. He served in the Eastern States Mission in upper state New York and New York City. He enjoyed serving on multiple high councils, as a gospel doctrine teacher, a scout master, and led multiple choirs. He especially loved his time serving as a High Priest group leader and as a temple worker. In his later years he served with his wife Kathryn in the Macon, Georgia mission.
CAREER:
Doug achieved a masters degree in Education. He taught Music and Math in Cedar city. And Institute and Seminary for many years in Canada. His extroverted personality also helped him in his work later on in sales.
QUALITIES:
Doug’s smile and joyful temperament accompanied most all of Doug’s interactions. He loved to tell stories with his special DJC exaggerated flare and he was a voracious reader. A thick novel and an apple fritter were often travel accessories seen with him. Doug was always willing to share his gifts and talents. He had a way of making everyone feel important.
Doug’s love for his wife and children inspired a life of service. He led by example, and he confronted challenges with courage and faith.
