Dr. David Hawkes Wray

March 5, 1924 — December 20, 2020

Dr. David Hawkes Wray, 96, returned to the loving arms of his sweetheart on Sunday, December 20, 2020.

David was born to Enos and Charlotte Wray on March 5, 1924 in Preston, Idaho.

He grew up in Pocatello, Idaho. In his youth, he spent many summers in West Yellowstone where he and his brothers had some great adventures. He ran track in high school and drove a cab at 16. David was passionate at anything he put his mind to and always overachieved at whatever he did.

He married Norene Roberts on December 30, 1944 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he was stationed at Camp Chaffee, before shipping out to Europe. He served 2 ½ years in the Army under General George Patton, 16th Armored Division.

After his return, Norene and David set off on their next adventure together by moving to Salt Lake City where he attended Medical School at the University of Utah. Following graduation he began his practice where he worked with others to establish Bountiful’s first hospital. He was privileged to practice Family Medicine for 40 years where he was loved and trusted by his many patients.

They had five children – Roger, Scott, Cyndi, K.C. and Lance.

David had a life full of service, not only as an esteemed physician, but also in the community. He obtained his pilot license and in addition to pleasure flying he flew to Wendover, where they had no medical care, to see patients. He spent several weeks in China for Operation Smile. He was President of Bountiful Community Concerts and Bountiful Sertoma, an International Service Club where he was selected as Mr. Sertoma. David also served as President of Little League Baseball, Davis County Medical Society and South Davis Hospital staff.

He and Norene served together in many faculties. They were service missionaries in Vietnam with David teaching Neonatal Resuscitation seminars and together teaching English to doctors and students in HaNoi. Several years later, they were called to serve in Nauvoo where David was a physician to all of the missionaries there and as Area Medical Advisor to seventeen missions.

One of his many talents was a beautiful singing voice, singing in the ward choir. A precious memory of his family was listening to him as he sang Let Me Call You Sweetheart to his beloved wife as they waltzed on Christmas Eve.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, David had many callings over the years, including Sunday School Counselor & President, YM Venture Leader, Senior President Stake Quorum of Seventy, Stake Mission President, Gospel Doctrine teacher, High Priest group presidency and teacher and Bountiful Temple Ordinance Worker.

David loved horses, hunting and fishing. He last water skied at 75, snow skied and ski dived with two of his grandchildren at 85. He took his last 17 mile bike ride at 87. He had many great family adventures with his children and grandchildren.

David is survived by his children Roger (Ruth) Wray, Cyndi (Rod) Lawrence, K.C (Corinne) Wray and Lance Wray, 22 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his eternal companion Norene, his son, Scott Wray, a daughter-in-law Debra Wray, and his grandson Travis Lawrence.

There will be a public viewing on Sunday evening December 27th from 6:00-8:30 pm at the LDS chapel at 1750 North 900 West, West Bountiful, Utah. Social distancing and masks will be required.

The funeral service will be held Monday December 28th at 11:00 am at the same location with a viewing beforehand. These will be by invitation only.

The service will be streamed live on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/Russon-Mortuary-Crematory-105412734572327
